Texas Medicaid Funds Cut Over Planned Parenthood

Yeah, I'm not liking this trend of limiting access to women's health issues being a political football. Texas just cut off access to women's health services to hundreds of thousand, if not millions, of women, most of them dirt poor and uninsured. Just when I thought legislative misogyny couldn't get any worse...

that's not really accurate.

Texas disqualified certain providers from receiving public funds( those whom provide abortion can't receive public funds under Texas law).. the federal government cut off women's health funding in response to that law.

thus far, Texas is stepping up to the plate to pay for those women's health care that has been cut off by the federal government.... they said they will come up with the money (somehow) to make up for the federal funds

Now before you start claiming that this is an "Obama agenda" to force Planned Parenthood onto the taxpayers, bear in mind that, during the Bush administration, Texas sought the same exemption for Planned Parenthood and was denied. Why? Because, under Federal law, states do NOT have the right to force their citizens to accept providers they do not want. Fact is that Planned Parenthood does an excellent job with cancer screenings, and because they are competent providers, people have the right to pick them as a provider, if they so choose.

What is this meme about Republicans wanting smaller government that stays out of peoples' lives? It's just a lie. Republicans, as well as Democrats, want the Federal government intruding into the lives of citizens, and the crap going on in Texas is the smoking gun which proves that fact.

Article is here.

When are you going to stop being an Obama apologist.

Texas has received federal funds since 2007 to pay for birth control, health screening and family exams for a subset of low-income women in the federal-state Medicaid program.

Texas Republicans passed legislation this year to exclude clinics affiliated with abortion providers, regardless of whether the clinics provide abortions.

The Medicaid program says patients would have access to the provider of their choice. Texas Republicans cut off womens health care funding from Medicare for ideology.

LOL...yeah good luck with that, Texas is more than $4.1 billion short in their current budget.

But on the bright side the money they'll not receive is only about $23 million, I guess it doesn't look that big alongside billions.

I saw a sign the other day that Texas and the rest of the country needs to take heed of :Don't mess with Texas women."

The Federal government is not the entity being coercive here. Citizens should get to choose who does their cancer screenings. IMHO, it is the State of Texas that is using government coersion to deny choice to it's citizens. This is not a states' rights issue. Rather, it is an issue of coersion by a state against it's citizens. This is just another instance of BIG GOVERNMENT Republicans forcing it's will upon the people. This isn't a Conservative move by Texas at all, since Conservatism demands that government stay out of peoples' lives.

I'm confused, please explain how someone was denied the choice of planned parenthood. Was this Texas program the only way that one could get s planned parenthood screening previously?

It is truly ridiculous, and it's a byproduct of our nation going so far off the reservation in terms of the roles of different units / levels of government.

Actually what the fed is ding in this case is perfectly in line with the constitution. The state accrue money from the fed for health care which was offered under predefined conditions (contract) and then posed a law that broke that agreement which makes the contact null and void thus allowing the fed to take away said funding.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that passing a law and entering into a contractual arrangement are two totally different things.

Not in this case. The states have a contract with the federal gov in order to get money for programs. This money always has strings attached that the state knows of before hand. Once a state violates those conditions, which this law does, the fed.can take back the money. You know why the legal drinking age is 21 dont you? Same principal

Medicare funds can no longer be used at these places, thus eliminating manys ability to choose these places as a provider.
But that doesn't matter since the law violates the contact TX has with the fed for medicaid dollars, just like the Indiana law did which is making its way to the supreme court.

It's wrong how the Feds can try and bully states with money. I guess the Feds don't care about women's health

The states can just say no. its one of the inherent powers of government that if I recall correctly even the founders used.

just to point out - Planned Parenthood does not provide cancer screenings.

... interesting. so, in other words, you think that reduction of a government funding is increasing government? do tell.

Not Buying Me Something = Taking It From Me

what, you want me to get a job and earn money and buy it myself? what are you, some kind of woman-hating fascist?

WTF are you talking about? Planned Parenthood has done more than FOUR MILLION breast cancer screenings just in the last five years. They also do thousands of cervical cancer screens every year. Their cancer screening budget is five times the size of their abortion services budget.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings - Planned Parenthood - St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri

Planned Parenthood offers breast and cervical cancer screenings for women at any time. These screenings can also be combined with a well-woman exam (which includes a pap smear and check-up). Should you need it, we will refer mammogram services.

Komen foundation cuts off cancer screening grants to Planned Parenthood - Daily Dose: A Boston Globe blog with health news, advice, and information.

Yes, Planned Parenthood provides cancer screenings and general gynecologic care, not just family planning services such as contraception and abortions.

It isn't really a contract when one side can unilaterally change anything and everything about the arrangement as they desire.

Interesting, considering:

I think welfare recipients should be subject to randomized and mandatory drug testing. There is absolutely no problem with that.

Don't worry, I'm sure you aren't the only total hypocrite in this thread.

No Pap smears? What are you thinking?
