Grandmother faces capital charge in death of Alabama third-grader

Death penalty!? Holy f'n ****! I ain't saying that she shouldn't face repercussions; but seriously....the death penalty? I don't think they intended to kill her, but through their own negligence and ignorance ended up doing so. We have laws for that, and those don't come with death penalty results. This ain't first degree murder. ****, the grandmother is a grandmother at 46....46. Dumb white trash doing what dumb white trash does best.

Well that really doesn't do much for my opinion that Alabama is a backwards ass State.

I was a grandmother at 38. I was a virgin when I was married. My daughter ignored me and married young, too. Does that make us dumb white trash?

Rereading the Alabama law, there is a provision for capital murder for any murder of a person under 14 years of age. That has got to be what the prosecution is hanging his hat on. Good thing I am not on the jury. No way. I do not believe that any life is more important than any other.

(15) << Murder>> when the victim is less than fourteen years of age.

I want to get a copy of the actual indictment.

Possibly. Statistically speaking, probably so, yes. If you made your grandchild run around till she died because of a candy bar, I'd say most certainly you are dumb white trash. Did you make your grandchild run around till dead?

I see. So it's okay to stereotype all women who married young and were grandmothers before the age of, say, 60 as dumb white trash. Would that also apply to women of other ethnicities? Or would black women be generalized as dumb black trash, Asians generalized as dumb Asian trash, and Latinas generalized as dumb Hispanic trash. Perhaps we should just make it easy on you, and consider all women who were young grandmothers to be dumb trash so as not to appear, you know, bigoted against any one ethnicity.

Not just women, men too. I have a very good friend who is Indian (India Indian, not Native American), who is white trash. He's not dumb though, he's actually very smart (and has no kids). Being white trash isn't about color of one's skin, it's about attitude.

Oh, it gets better! So at what age, Ikari, may both men and women become grandparents without being considered dumb trash? You've already established that because I was 38, I am probably dumb white trash... so how long should I have waited until you would assume I am not dumb and not trash.

Statistically speaking, the less educated tend to have more kids at an earlier age. Don't yell at me, yell at math.

Yea, just like typical Americans, they're getting their emotions involved.

It seems that anything involving a child makes people become illogical in their thinking. As a child, as a punishment, I was forced to push mow my parents yard. In July. I got hot as hell doing it, even dizzy, but I sure as hell didn't backsas my mom again. If I'd have died, would she have deserved the death penalty? Absolutely not. Their must be premeditation, and there obviously is not, so that's out. If they don't drop the charges to something that will stick, she could walk.

Do I think she should walk? No. I think that an accidental death occurred through negligence on the part of the grandma. 5-10 years, tops with parole. A child died. The grandma did NOT kill her directly, did not PLAN on killing her, etc. Sorry, no death penalty. Not even close, honestly.

What would have happened to you if you refused to mow the lawn when you were told to?

Isn't 38 about right to be a grandmother?

A generation is generally 20 years so if you have your child at 19 and your daughter has hers at 19, they you are a grandmother at 38, just about right.

It is really only in America where women have their first kid at 40 so their kid has one at 20 and is a grandmother at 60.

Seems to me your making it about race, then saying Ikari is being bigoted.

It isn't just America, and age of first kid is not quite 40. It's starting to approach 30 (other countries are closer to 30). The number of women who are over 30 and having their first child is rising as well. As a society becomes increasingly complex and educated, the age of first birth goes up. Generally speaking, the more educated one is, the more likely they are to have their first child at a much later date. All the people I know (and this is a small group sample, and not well representative of the whole) have been exceedingly well educated and haven't had their first kid to near or past 30. It's just how the numbers work out. And that’s not limited to the US. It’s common in most of the industrial countries.

Like minus the unexpected "dumb white trash" part. But I agree, arguing for the death penalty is irrationally harsh in this and it's emotional, revenge based position. I favor a little more mercy.

From what I've read, the bus driver for the girl's school bus overheard the grandma say something like, "I'm gonna run you 'til you can't run no more." That statement would suggest intent to drive the child to the point of collapse (physical or emotional??). I'm betting, if that's true (the statement being made, that is) that it has something to do with the selected charges.
Not really. Parents say stuff like that to their kids all time in a figurative sense. Phrases like that are a staple in pop culture. It does not necessarily suggest literal intent to drive a child to collapse.

Like the mercy she showed her grand daughter?
My preference for mercy does not depend on whether or not other people have the same preference.

It's too bad that we cant force grandma to run till she dies.
It's actually really good that we can't do that so we don't devolve as society even further than we are now.

The charges are making more sense, "District Attorney Jimmie Harp said Garrard was charged with the capital crime because the child's death occurred during another felony, child abuse." The grandmother forced the 9 year old to run and carry firewood until she collapsed in exhaustion in her yard. Autopsy photos show marks on the girl's arms from where the logs dug into her skin. The autopsy also revealed the girl was severely dehydrated and had extremely low sodium levels. They compared her condition to that of an athlete who ran a marathon without drinking any water. "

While the "punishment" was going on, it is alleged the stepmother "spent time on her laptop and talking on a cellphone while her stepdaughter was forced to run"

The grandmother was sadistic no doubt as there have been medical reports from an unrelated custody case show the child had health issues and made frequent trips to doctors. Both the stepmother, who was awarded custody and the grandmother are equally at fault here.

This child never had a chance with these two people who were entrusted with her care.

Those women are not the majority by any means, but that does not mean that somebody that has a baby at 18 or 19 is trash.

Those women are not the majority by any means,

No ****ing **** Sherlock. Did you even read the rest of the sentence there that you didn't highlight?

but that does not mean that somebody that has a baby at 18 or 19 is trash.

Nor did I say that. I said that statistically speaking, it is likely. Not that it is.

Jesus tap dancing Christ on a pogo stick, does anyone actually read anymore? Or perhaps understand a bit of statistics? Go back to school.

Yes I did read what you said.

You are saying statistically speaking a young mother is trash, which means you are saying the majority of young mothers are trash. Isn't that the point you are trying to get across?

God damned it. Our school system is failing us!
