U.S. News - Election, economy spark explosive growth of militias

The election of President Barack Obama in 2008 triggered an explosion in the number of militias and so-called patriot groups in the United States, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported in its annual tally of such anti-government organizations.
There were 149 militias and patriot groups when Obama took office, compared to more than 1,200 today — an increase of 755 percent, the nonprofit civil rights organization reported.

"The increase has just been astounding," said Mark Potok, editor-in-chief of the SPLC report. "The reality is that many of these groups are becoming more and more fearful that Barack Obama will win the re-election. You can see the anger rising along with that fear."

The SPLC defines the "patriot" movement as made up of conspiracy-minded individuals who see the federal government as their primary enemy. The movement includes paramilitary militias as well as groups of "sovereign citizens," who believe they are not subject to federal or state laws, nor obligated to pay federal taxes, according to SPLC.
The center also reports a steady rise in the number of hate groups in America — from 604 in 2000, to more than 1,000 last year. Those include anti-gay groups, anti-Muslim groups, black separatists and "Christian Identity" groups, which hold racist and anti-Semitic views that overlap with neo-Nazi beliefs.

Thoughts on this? I hope they get whacked by artillery.

I hop they get hit by the spetnaz and killed in a surgical firefight like ignorant separatists.

The press loved these kinds of stories in the '90s, too. Exactly these kinds of stories . . . especially when they tried to connect Timothy McVeigh to the Michigan Militia.

Relation? I don't think they're trying to connect anyone whos killed a couple hundred innocent people to militias atm.

Boys will be boys.

Color me cynical. The OP (and associated articles) cite 1200 private militias and 2000 different "hate groups".

Anybody have a link to the list that identifies all these different groups.....??

probably in the first link of the article text SPLC report or somesuch.

Personally, I'm not all that comfortable with armed groups rolling around like this. Especially when racism, homophobia, and religiously motivated bigotry is often a part of their agendas. I don't see how these groups are any different from gangs. Both groups support violence and exclusivity, and are armed with dangerous weapons. So yeah, I see these militias as gangs with different terminology. And they differ by their age and race, of course.

I keep telling you people that sooner rather than later there is going to be a Third American Revolution. The first one started with small town and regional militias under the Minuteman system (which had been in place for more than a century) and the Sons of Liberty. This is a more high tech and slightly more militant version of that same ideal.

My thoughts are that it doesn't bother me at all, as long as they don't start a war.

A militia, according to some standards, might be a couple of Bubbas in a pick-up truck. ;)

Didn't amount to anything then, and it doesn't now. The SPLC is simply trying to stir up trouble.

They're pretty well known for employing the use of fear tactics. Last time I check on their site, if it's the same one I'm thinking of, they had the rebel flag listed in the hate symbol pics.

Yeah, they aren't exactly neutral observers.

Elelction is coming up. Got to drum up the fear vote on the left. Get out the vote or the militias are coming to get you. Santorum is going to take over by military coup and take your birth control away.

Apocalyptic hypernationalist patriot cults are innocent victims of the government now!

The left doesnt fear them, they're quite aware that they're toast if they start anything.

Just a bunch of pissed off people with guns as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully, we won't see a spike in bigotry based crimes, but something tells me that this won't be much more of a problem than it was. The SPLC has a tendency to paint in broad strokes with this kind of thing. A lot of groups that don't advocate violence or bigotry get tossed into the mix, like the Oath Keepers. A sensationalist media is all too happy to let start a new, stupid panic.

Well, that's an idiotic response, as it doesn't relate to anything I said.

I can see why MK likes the SPLC as a source. The SPLC supports illegal aliens.

The OP story is much to do about nothing.

Such a non-story. What IS telling is that POS Janet Napolitano deeming anyone who wants to return to constitutional principles, owns a gun, or returns from military theater should be on a terrorist watch list. The concept that people who think the federal has gone too far are "extremists likely to do harm" is an obvious fallacy on it's face and the fear of people who are more than happy to use their positions of authority to bully humans into compliance of those who fight back is telling of their cowardice and agendas.

Just remember that the late 18th and early 19th Century equivelant are the people who put this country on the map and kept it here.

So your for shelling American citizens before they have done anything wrong?
Dude. They formed a militia - they're clearly paranoid and prone to violence.

We must shell them with artillery now!!!

DIE!
DIE!
DIE!
