Racist? Texas high school apologizes for fans' 'USA!' chant after basketball game

Consider yourself crowned! I can't imagine how I missed that condemnation amidst all the rest of yours, aimed as they are at *nebulous* posters. Er, J-mac. But sure, pointing out all this effort and straw stuffing is focused upon the actions of the same handful of tweens the whole topic is predicated on is a diversion! Sure. Why not.

I certainly hope I didn't hurt you feelings TOO much, proving you wrong and all. The diversions, ignoring of context, and focusing on irrelevancy. I am SO glad that you have now seen the light. Perhaps, from now on, you won't be so nebulous.

I'm not too sure how you proved me wrong, but hey you gotta go with what brought you. I will defend your right to be "offended" by the actions of a handful of tweens for 5 seconds and anything else you want to be offended by. Only I will make fun of you for that as well as the idiotic insistence that bringing up the entire premise of your "offense" is supposed to be diversionary. I'm charitable like that.

I don't need you to defend any rights, since I've already explained repeatedly that there is no right to not be offended. I understand why you would continue to ignore that, though. Doesn't fit in your agenda, and I'm SURE you wouldn't want to veer away from that.

I'm charitable too. I'll continue to make fun of you for your diversions and focusing on irrelevancy JUST so you can stay with your black and white thinking. I'll also continue to make fun of you for being unable to recognize your own limitations on this matter. But that's OK. I am hopeful that you can be educated on such matters.

So I can't count on your retainor fee as I do my books come end of month? Damn!

By all means please do make fun of me and my b/w thinking and any other adjectives you can come up with. My limitations, education and any other ad homs ya got, that is after all the hallmark of all great master debaters. How else are we to know you have not anything even marginally intelligent left to say at this point? You go "Captain Courtesy"!

Can't even take responsibility to do your own books. Figures.

Poor Gie. I suppose it might be a good idea next time to not start using the ad homs. Then you won't have to get so upset when they get thrown back at you. Here's a pro-tip: If you don't like it, don't do it yourself. You might fare a little better, next time. Of course, it WOULD mean you would have to take some responsibility for things.

Nah. What is the point in using ad homs in an argument about what a handful of tweens did for 5 seconds? I'm just not that convinced the investment in the issue leads to much that is worth while. Though I congratulate you, clearly you have found my Achilles heal. You making an ass of yourself.

Imagine my shame.

I missed where you had IMO paid lip service to both chants being offensive. You missed me saying I found both chants offensive in this situation. But speaking of missing, I seem to have missed where I "started" using the ad homs and got "upset" when you started throwing them back at me. I suspect that this is because you "started" using the ad homs and throwing them at me, not vice versa. So in addition to you being the source of the ad hom personal attacks, we now have you lecturing about what? Responsibility? Yeah I know. It looks completely idiotic, but maybe you were just tired at the time. Or drunk.

It's already established that there was no racism, seeing that the one team chanted "USA!" in all prior games.

Is this pretty much wrapped up, or should this dead horse continue to be beaten?

Umm...who "established" that? And what does repetition have to do with anything? I didn't realize that things stopped being racist if they were said more than once.

How is chanting "USA!" racist if said team has been chanting it against every team they've gone to. Factor in that the teams they've faced were of different backgrounds.

And more to the point, how is chanting "USA!" even racist? I guess "USA" is a racial slur now?

Of course it is not racist. The actual allegation that the chant was racist originated with the reporter who filed the story. Posters around here ran with that, largely without giving the matter much thought and even less attention to the reporting of the incident. As of this moment, no other reporter in the country has bothered approaching the story in a journalistic manner. Most of the media in the country picked up the story and ran with it and the so called racism slant as well. It is actually a pretty damning indictment on the state of journalistic ethics in America these days.
And more to the point, how is chanting "USA!" even racist? I guess "USA" is a racial slur now?
I would not be surprised to see some serious contortions and somersaults and a bit of serious stretching too, all in order to show how chanting USA is racist and bad bad bad. In fact there is already a lot of that in this thread.

I would not call it racist, bigoted? Yes.

What they were doing was calculated and wrong. Chanting USA in a high school came because you beat a mostly Latino team is questionable at best. The motives can't be good. This was pretty disgraceful.

Actually what they were doing was replying to the equally bigoted "Alamo Whites" chant that the losing teams side of the stands started upon losing the game. They were both wrong. As I stated earlier, I'm more concerned about what if anything, parents on both sides of the situation are doing to educate their children about why both chants are offensive and not acceptable in this situation, after the incident. And again, the fact that Edison came from an underdog position and made it to this game, which is quite an accomplishment, has been lost in all the brouhaha. A brouhaha that is centered upon the actions of a handful of tweens chanting for 5 seconds in reply to what some other tweens were chanting for a couple of minutes.

Must have been a slow slow slow day in the news cycle.

None of that was mentioned in the article? I hate the news sometimes. They also failed to mention the Alamo Heights students have chanted USA at all the games no matter who they were playing as well as pep rallys.

I have to agree, what a waist of time.

And yet, that's what you did. So, we know you are hypocritical along with the other things about you that I pointed out. Good to know.

Shame would denote that you have taken responsibility for your behavior. We already know that is not the case. Dishonest too.

Of course you started the ad homs. And then whined when I responded back in kind. If you don't like it... don't do it. Really is a simple concept. You might want to try using it.

Oh good lord don't let the fact that I have not dropped any ad hom bombs on you get in the way of your whine. Oh man, the shame I must feel about this nonexistent occurrence. To say nothing of the rank not accepting responsibility for not attacking you with ad homs.

You do realize you don't even make any sense and appear to just be talking as they say, out your posterior? Of course you do.

It's easy to argue that the chant isn't racist, but arguing that it isn't racist because they chant it frequently is not even close to a quality argument.

And more to the point, how is chanting "USA!" even racist? I guess "USA" is a racial slur now?
Racist is arguable. Depending on context, anything can be USED, key word, USED, to insult another person or group. In this case, "anything" is USA.

Why the **** am I still posted in this thread? So much stupid.

Respectfully disagreed. If they went around chanting "nigger!" instead of "USA!," then I'd agree with you. "USA!" in itself is not racist, and chanting it at all games supports that they weren't racist.

I don't see it as racist. When white folk are insulted with "cracker," and such and nothing is really done about that, then cries about "USA!" being racist aren't taken seriously, either. Besides, the hispanic team was first in shouting "Alamo whites." Whatever the case, as Gie mentioned, bother were wrong and immature.

No none of that was mentioned in the article. Virtually everything we have learned about the incident regarding the "Alamo Whites" chant and the fact that the "USA" chant has been a season long thing has come from the public and witnesses that were at the game. We learned that the same USA chant was also used at a game against an equally affluent all white team from Austin just weeks before, not from any reporter but from a Alamo Heights student in one of the feedback links in the thread. Some posters in the thread have tried to make hey out of the fact that the kids were using the USA chant, asking why would these kids to do that? For me, I don't really spend too much time trying to figure out why teenagers do what they do. Regardless that the chant had been used all season long, in this situation given in reply to the "Alamo Whites" chant? It was just wrong, both were wrong and clearly could be found offensive.

IMO the most offensive thing about this whole story is the reporting, or should I say lack of good reporting that got the whole controversy going. Locally the reporter has some egg on his face and has been called out in the paper for it as well as on radio and TV. The "reporter" is the source of the salacious charge of racism, and frankly that is not what I was taught about journalism in college. But then a lot of what passes for "journalism" these days would not pass for it way way way back when I was in college.

I never said "USA" was in and of itself racist. In fact, I stated the opposite. Neither "nigger" nor "USA" is inherently insulting. Both BECOME insulting depending upon the context in which it was used. In this context, it was insulting. Whether it's racist is arguable as I said. I hope that you'll pay attention to what I said this time.

Where did they say that they chant "USA" at every game? And why are you taking their word for it?

This has nothing to do with what I said and the "they did it first" whine is less than amusing. Although, the fact that they were chanting "Alamo Whites" just furthers the argument that chanting USA was meant to be insulting.

Quoted for truth, justice and the American way! USA! USA! USA! ;)

Where did they say that they chant "USA" at every game?
In one of the links early in the thread that fact was brought up by several Alamo Heights students. It was also brought out in the local paper and on the local evening news and radio. The coach of the team has also acknowledged that while his team has used that chant all season long, it was inappropriate in this situation, which is why he ended the chant at the 5 second mark.

I found one of them using Google. Still don't see how frequency changes things - even one of the students from Alamo Heights said that he thought some of the kids meant it to be offensive.
