Why chant that at a basketball game that only includes Americans?

If it was a game against Mexico, it would have made sense, because they'd be cheering for their country.

You guys on the right are getting all up in a wad because their actual words were not offensive. You can say one thing and have it mean different things depending on context.

    Here's a primer:

Family goes to Disney on Ice, father says to his daughter "Look at the fairies!"
At the Gay Pride parade, someone says "Look at the fairies!"

    Do you see the difference?

Yeah, cuz everyone knows if you're proud to be an American, that means you're proud to be racist. [/sarcasm]
I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on whats being proposed here, hed agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute. - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

This does not apply to ALL of either lean, of course, but as a generality, it's what I've seen.

And how the other team responded or didn't respond is irrelevant to what the initial team did.
Minimized...yeah. thats what I opt for. Precisely. When I see things like this I laugh... not at the ignorant people chanting USA but at the ignorant people that get spun up over something like this. I promise you I didnt tell my children to run over and kick little Johnny's ass for calling them a name. We didnt organize neighborhood protests or call their mommies. I had a little chat with my kid over the insignificance of little Johnny and how his actions speak volumes of him and nothing of my child. Of course...it was easier explaining it to a child than to people invested in getting all butt hurt. But lets not retreat from the basic factual reality...We will have threads and multiple postings over insignificant crap like this...as if it matters...but how often will you see people paying attention to the things happening where people are actually getting hurt or maimed. Oh no...he told an insensitive joke. As if this and worse doesnt happen in EVERY community across the country. Minimize it? Hell...you cant MINIMIZE something as insignificant as this.

So am I, but I don't walk around chanting "USA! USA!" at random.

And I would AGREE with that...which is why it is funny they didnt turn right around and join them.

actually, it was spot on in response you your post:

the opposing side, if they were Americans, would have no reason to be intimidated by such chanting, and as i noted in the post you objected to, they could have responded with their own USA USA chant since they were also from the USA, land of the easily offended
and for the few who were likely not American citizens, then the chant would possibly remind them that they were outsiders looking in with no long term security living in a nation while undocumented. and tell us again why that is our problem, and we should take care not to say or do anything that offends those who live among us illegally
and if they were not American citizens but were documented then they were free to chant 'zimbabwe, zimbabwe' or wherever the hell they were from

which leads me to your question why would ONE feel the need to chant "USA, USA"?
because they are a bunch of high school students overjoyed that they beat the opposing team
why do such teens say anything
would it make you feel better if they said 'san antonio, san antonio' despite that both schools are also from san antonio
this is grousing about a problem that doesn't actually exist

while we ignore the underlying problem of re-segregation
we are negotiating about dividing a pizza and in the meantime israel is eating it
