The final 2 groups that went at it was a group of black kids and a group of puerto ricans. The PR group won, and the crowd, or part of the crowd was getting pretty excited for them and the phrase Boriqua over and over. In case you don't know it means Puerto Rico or puerto rican or something like that. The other group of kids, or any of the other losers or anyone else in that crowd didnt start getting huffy and crying because of them chanting Boriqua. Certainly didn't make the news, and there damn sure weren't a ton of liberals there telling how wrong it was to have pride in the country many of them were from.

So I want to ask now, do you think those people in the crowd were being racist?

Your post reminds me of this:

    Racist? Definitely no.
Used in an insulting context? Yes.
    Deserving of punishment? No

    You still don't get it....

Why would Americans be offended by the chants of Boriqua, if the Americans were not from PR??
The Hispanic students had a legitimate reason for being offended because of the insinuation that they are NOT American, because in fact they ARE American.

That is prejudice, and very characteristic of being racist.

In that same dance competition i was at and people were chanting borirqua, what if a white group had won and people started chanting USA then. Or if the black group had won and USA was chanted. At what point does it become racist? Seems like only when white people are involved.
No, they don't dictate whether you can be proud of your heritage, but that was never the issue. The chanting of USA wasn't only a show of pride, but also an insinuation that the Hispanic students were not as American as the Alamo School. That is prejudice, and therefore racist in nature.

They may have been ethnocentric, behaving ethnocentrically. They were not racist.

Hypothetically (or not as the case may be), if the other team was made up of illegal aliens would the Alamo team have been socially acceptable in chanting USA? What if the other team was displaying the flag of Mexico or shouting "viva la Mexico", would they have been accused of racism? Or, would they have been celebrating there ethnic heritage?
The US is an odd ship. The captain yells out when he sees obtacles , but 535 individual propellers do the steering.

Reports now say that the losing team started chanting "Alamo whites" before they were drown out by the USA chant...Nice how that was reported in context isn't it?

Hmmm, I didn't know that the USA consisted of white people only.

What really burns my blood is that you can not possibly imagine the stuff my daughter has heard playing basketball and running in track meets at predominantly black schools, but MSNBC wouldn't be the least bit interested in a story like that.

    Double standards run amuck.

Well then. That makes this OK. Seriously. How quickly you condemned this behavior. Oh wait. You didn't.
