Considering that I live in the area and attend a high school within their district, I can definitely attest to the fact that Alamo Heights has quite a reputation of being a school filled with bigots with a minuscule minority populous. With the knowledge and the reputation of some of the school's populace being bigoted it's easy to see why there rant can be construed as racist, as it most definitely is.

Wait, wait... wait! Let me see if I understand this. Two high school teams were playing basketball, in a high school. Both teams were from American schools, comprised of American students, playing in an American league, in America. And someone thinks that chanting "USA" is racist?

This. Whoever thinks that pro-USA means anti-Hispanic is the racist.

Any more straws you'd like to grasp at?

I think you might have missed one.

Racism may be strong a term. How about "These students are COMPLETE ****ING MORONS who need a lesson in remedial geography." I weep for the educational system in Texas, if this is what it produces.

The thinking process there is just amazing.

If the losing school had won and there were hecklers shouting USA USA I wonder if there would have been this uproar. Probably not, the hecklers would have been viewed as sore loser and forgotten.

It couldn't be because the context would be vastly different now would it? But I agree, I don't think this incident is very newsworthy, either way. Also, who would be the hecklers if they were sore losers? Wouldn't they be sore winners?

I do however find it hilarious that some believe the USA USA chant isn't racially charged and that the students did it because they were "proud to be American" that is just ridiculous, I don't know how many sporting events you all have been to, but I've never once seen anyone start chanting USA USA when both teams are based in America, that's just redundant. The fact of the matter is that you all are avoiding the context inherent in the situation and instead are crying great injustice, THE COACH of the team immediately afterwards hushed the crowd, now, I wonder why he would do that if it were truly patriotic and not in anyway a pestering chant, eh?
