Obama Will Speak at Commencement at Barnard College

The president isn't abusing ANYTHING. The college CHOSE to invite him. He personally didn't bump ANYONE. The college did and the woman even said that was ok, she would speak another time.

You are making a mountain out of a molehill on this one.

As you said, anyone would bump someone to have a President come speak. Thus the President knew this, and additionaly knew that he was bumping someone who HAD been invited, and a woman at that, who is much more relavent to a womans college and commencement ceremony. Since weve established his motivation is political, this means he knew he was bumping a woman for political purposes. You would think women would be upset at a man, a powerful man, muscling in on a womens ceremony to pander about womens issues. Will Pelosi be up in arms at not a single male speaker being present at a womens college commencement?

We had Katie Couric for ours last year and she was great. I mean to sit there and listen to her reference balls in her speech was probably the funniest thing in the world. But as a student it would be even better to have the President of the United States give the speech. I am jealous of these kids.

No, that has not been established, we don't know yet what his speech will be.

The woman being bumped even said it was ok, so it was with her consent.

For any college (even a woman's college) to have the president speak during graduation is an honor.

Like I said, you are making a mountain out of a molehill and the majority of people realize this. That's all I care.

This is just another venting thread for an anti-obama potus who desperately wants underlying reasons/scandals for Obama's appreciation for women recently. My guess is your reasoning tells you he is starting a sex war, which in reality, The GOP has started this sex war. I am glad he is reinforcing his support in women's education. He needs to draw as much contrast between himself and the circus of clowns currently left in the GOP primary.

Seems to me like you're the only one trying to create a gender war here. You'll notice that not one other person has made mention of gender issues.

There is so many things wrong here. The president usurping a college graduation to make a political campaign speech. A man pushing a woman to the side. Shouldnt women be upset at this? Shouldnt voters be upset at the abuse of position?

Upsurping? Let me guess, you hate Obama?

Debora L. Spar, the president of Barnard, said she was thrilled that the president would deliver the keynote speech at the commencement on May 14.

“This is just an extraordinary opportunity for the college, a moment in time that will be unforgettable for the graduates and their parents,” Ms. Spar said in an interview on Friday.

In its announcement, the college said Mr. Obama, a 1983 graduate of Columbia University, would be awarded the Barnard Medal of Distinction, the college’s highest honor, at the commencement. Barnard is an independent liberal arts college for women; it is one of the four undergraduate schools of Columbia and enrolls about 2,400 students.

It's ok, I understand your scared.

Truth is, you just like to bitch about Obama. It's not Obama's fault the college made the decision to allow him to speak. When you graduate high school, you will learn this.

He asked them to let him speak. He knew they weren't going to say no.

If it mattered that much to the college, they would have said no. Yes, he knows it's political. He's running for re-election. It would be unrealistic to expect a person that's running for re-election to be apolitical.

Is this all the GOP has on Obama? Criticizing the location where he gives speeches? Mad because he's taking advantage of a sex war the REPUBLICAN party created in an attempt to suppress women's access to healthcare? Think long and hard why the GOP is currently the underdog in the race for the presidency.

Are you kidding me? These people would criticize Obama based on which brand of toilet paper he uses. If it turned out to be the same brand they use, they'd say it's just Obama using that toilet paper for political gain.

The GOP and Obama haters should keep faith, maybe Obama will screw it up.

Historically, some politicians in the middle of a presidential campaign have been less than deft in finding the right tone for addressing the graduates of women’s colleges. In 1955, Adlai E. Stevenson gave the commencement speech at Smith College, telling the women that their job should be to influence “man and boy” through the “humble role of housewife.”

“It just went down as one of those bad moments,” Ms. Spar said.

Oh, no! This certainly isn't all we have on Obama. :lamo

Youre entitled to your opinion. Just stick to the topic, and not me. Thats all I care.

What do republicans have to do with anything? The article I posted was by the New York Times, not the GOP.
