Florida mulls outlaw of Shariah, other foreign laws; critics say bill addresses made-up threat - The Washington Post

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A measure to ban the use of foreign laws in domestic courtrooms is progressing in Florida’s statehouse, one of dozens of similar efforts across the country that critics call an unwarranted campaign driven by fear of Muslims.

Forty such bills are being pursued in 24 states, according to a tally by the National Conference of State Legislatures, a movement backers say is a response to a glaring hole in legal protections for Americans. Opponents say the bills simply address a made-up threat and could threaten agreements made under Jewish or other religious law.
This has nothing to do with a fear of anyone. That is hyperbole. I admit it is directed mainly at Sharia Law, but it also would eliminate the Biblical Law arguments against SSM etc.

American should be governed by American laws and no others.

It is out of fear, because we don't have laws that are allowed simply because it's in the bible. This is aimed at Shariah law and nothing more. It's a waste of time.

Since I don't live in Florida, I don't really care. However, if my state were to waste time and money on this I would be upset.

I agree with passing laws that ban religious and foreign laws. The only laws an American judge should consider are American laws.Judges dealing with law suits involving forign companies should still only use American laws. If you want some religious rites carried out when you die then write them specially in a will or contract.I am sure some globalist scum will boo this law and say its based on fear mongering.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

The study’s findings suggest that Shariah law has entered into state court decisions, in conflict with the Constitution and state public policy. Some commentators have said there are no more than one or two cases of Shariah law in U.S. state court cases; yet we found 50 significant cases just from the small sample of appellate published cases.

This legislation is nonsense. The message I glean from it is that this is a prophylactic measure to head off any type of push by various Islamist communities in attempting to have civil law set aside by Sharia law in the courtroom. However, a judge should not cite any religious law to decide a case before him/her as the Constitution prohibits such activity.

    For example,

The Islamic Circle of North America, a New York-based group, is spending $3 million on its Defending Religious Freedom campaign, which kicks off Monday and explains Sharia law and common misunderstandings to everyday Americans. Sharia law guides Islamic life, from praying five times a day to fasting during the holy month of Ramadan and abstaining from pork, alcohol and sex outside of marriage. Sharia has also been cited as a justification for violent, sometimes deadly punishments for minor crimes in majority-Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia.

The Defending Religious Freedom website says "American Muslims...are more interested in the role of Sharia in "praying, fasting and alms-giving, as well as divorce, burials and inheritance."

"There are certain words that, if people use them in the Arabic language it becomes a dirty word, but if people take the time to understand what Sharia is about, they would not have a problem," said Magid. "When people talk about criminal law in the Quran, none of the Muslims say they want that legal code in America. What we are saying is that in the private life of a Muslim, nobody should impose on them how to conduct a marriage or preside over a funeral. Instead of using the word Sharia, we should use the words 'Muslim values' or 'Islamic values.'"

In another case, where a judge in Florida has decided that Islamic law should be used, "The mosque believes wholeheartedly in the Koran and its teachings...they certainly follow Islamic law in connection with their spiritual endeavors. But with respect to secular endeavors, they believe Florida law should apply in Florida courts..
