Father says son who took gun to school 'made a bad mistake'

how hard is it to put a damn trigger lock on a gun???????????

such an easy step, and it saves lives.

He didnt have to. We did. What you 'know' about me is precisely zero. Some people live their lives pretending to give a ****...some people live their lives acting. I hope you are comfortable with your contributions to the world. Me? Im just fine.

Lighten up Francis.

The boy belongs in a state mental facility until the age of 18. 9 years old or not,

Gotta love the tough guys. He's 9. His understanding of the world isn't quite what yours is. Although based solely on your comments, I may have to retract that.

A few things:

1. The kid didn't threaten anybody with the gun, take it out, or suggest any intent to use it. The gun went off in his backpack.
2. We do not know why the boy had the gun. There could be 1,000 motives and the real one may not be sociopathic or dangerous.
3. This kid is obviously remorseful/fearful/sad/distraught. The boy's character in court was not in any way indicative of of sociopathy or psychopathy.

That said, I don't agree with the assault charge. Perhaps the others, but not the assult. Unless other evidence exists that isn't being reported, I just can't see it that way.

I think that visitation from the mother should be stripped and before anybody with a history like hers (or the dad's) is allowed visitation with their children they should be mandated to go through thorough home inspections, parenting classes, and monitored visitations. That child never should have been left alone with the mother, gun or not.

That poor girl is suffering and this poor boy is now likely to be forever haunted by what he did. I believe you should be accountable for your actions, but I can't see any good from putting this boy in a home or in juvenile detention.

The mother is a brainless crack ho or so it sounds. She will do jail time on this.

Seeing as how the mother was a convicted felon, she shouldn't even have access to a gun. If she wouldn't follow the law preventing her from owning a gun, what makes you think she would follow a law that required a trigger lock?

Btw, a defensive firearm with a trigger lock is exactly worthless.

Tell that to the family of the little girl. That gun was loaded, possibly left with the safety off and left exposed. Absolute idiocy. Go ahead, toss the 2nd amendment at me...

Sigh...

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to come along and take a tragic situation and make a political comment about it. I figured for that kind of a dickhead move it would take 40...maybe 50 posts. Shoulda known better...
Aren't politics based on real life situations? Why would a real-life situation not spark political comments...on a political debate site? I'll never understand people who think that tragic situations ought to be immune to political commentary. Many political positions stem from knowledge of such situations.

right, keep your guns in the house around the kids, without a trigger lock.

that's pure genius.

Both of you are putting words in my mouth, and demonstrably have little to no knowledge of firearms. At no point did I suggest that loaded firearms be left unsecured… I merely pointed out that a convicted felon is not likely to be too concerned with following the law. Please do your best to keep your hoplophobic biases in check.

Btw, there are loaded weapons without safties around my two small children 24 hours a day and neither have managed to pick one up, much less take it anywhere. Are you horrified now? Am I an irresponsible parent or what?

I agree, locking up a 9 year old is pointless. Lots of mandated counseling, etc. is needed. And yes, the family of the girl will likely sue, as she's still fighting for her life at this time, and they will have huge medical bills.

But the adult that owned that gun should take that childs place in jail. If gun owners aren't responsible for taking care of their weapons then why should they care if a child shoots someone?

Why? You can still shoot yourself in the head and that's the most common use for a handgun isn't it?

Umm no. What you said was this.

I'm the first one here to suggest that there be tighter controls on firearms. This whole thing is sickening. And obviously the Mother will get sued at the very least in a civil suit. But I am at a total loss to understand how prosecuting this 9 year old boy, AND keeping him from his custodial parent is a good idea in the wake of this tragic accident.

Putting a 9 year old boy in jail accomplishes what here?
Well, why did he bring the gun to school? Was he planning on shooting or threatening somebody? Or was he just bringing it for run?

It's odd to me how many people in this thread think the kid is totally harmless and it's the mother who should be in jail. Are we forgetting that children have, in fact, committed crimes and killed others? How do we know he wouldn't have done that later if the gun hadn't gone off?

Obviously the parents are irresponsible, but I still have a lot of questions concerning the kid.

Sadly, that "dumbass comment" is completely true. You're either just too uninformed or biased to acknowledge it. There are plenty of ways to render a defensive firearm secure without bolting a lock through the trigger. Sorry.

The way that you clipped out the body of my message and choose to attack one sentence was quite artful though.

you clearly don't know **** about either of us.

On the contrary, I've seen enough of posts from both of you to draw an accurate conclusion, Thunder. You're on record, after all, wanting to ban all handguns.

I don't have to fabricate anything, your words speak for themselves. On the other hand, if you have any evidence that I engage in unsafe or illegal behavior with firearms, I'd love to see it.

Back on topic, in this case, Mom had no business having a gun in the first place. If criminals didn't behave like ...well... criminals, then this incident would not even be up for discussion (unless you're going to now claim that "crooked gundealers" would have sold the 9 year old a gun.)

Horse****. You have no idea what his mental capacity, thought process, or reasoning is or was. Kids do indeed sometimes do very stupid things for no good reason. There is nothing that has been presented to indicate he was bringing the gun to school for malevolent purposes. It could have been nothing more than he though it would be cool to show off. And you REALLY believe putting him away for 9 years is helpful...to anyone? Oh...and BTW...if you think 9 years in a mental facility 'helps' anyone or anything you are sadly mistaken. At best they make him a chemical zombie for the duration.

Even back at the age of 9 or younger, I knew it would be wrong and INSANE to bring a gun to school. Whether he meant to for show and tell or to shoot someone is irrelevant. He blengs in a mental institute till the age of 18. When he's 18, he's entitled to a review.

That hasn't been established. all that is know is that he had not taken it out of his backback.

It's odd to me how many people in this thread think the kid is totally harmless and it's the mother who should be in jail.

I don't recall anyone suggesting he's harmless. Although most indications suggest he may well be. Are you suggesting the Mother shouldn't be held responsible for leaving a loaded gun where a child could get ahold of it? Really?

Are we forgetting that children have, in fact, committed crimes and killed others? How do we know he wouldn't have done that later if the gun hadn't gone off?

We don't know that. But we also don't know if he was just taking it with him because he planned to run away. Seriously, the crimes of other children, especially murder do happen, but they are exceedingly rare.

Obviously the parents are irresponsible, but I still have a lot of questions concerning the kid.

So throw him in jail until he turns 18. That will fix him. argh.

hoplophobic= fears handguns?

you're a liar.

Try Google search. I can't be bothered to explain the big words to you, Thunder. You've turned this thread into a personal attack as you always do when someone calls you on your crap.

That dumbass remark was the comment that got the reaction. I specifically pointed that out. Funny how you left that out when you acted butthurt. Hypocrisy knows no bounds with you it appears.

The salient point was, whether it is a trigger lock, a safe or some other method of securing that gun, it didn't happen. To suggest that a trigger lock is useless is typical NRA nonsense. Had one been used this girl would never have been shot. But hey, it is still useless.

trigger locks are simple common sense. they prevent kids or thieves from using your gun.
