A trial court in Iran has issued its final verdict, ordering a Christian pastor to be put to death for leaving Islam and converting to Christianity, according to sources close to the pastor and his legal team.Supporters fear Youcef Nadarkhani, a 34-year-old father of two who was arrested over two years ago on charges of apostasy, may now be executed at any time without prior warning, as death sentences in Iran may be carried out immediately or dragged out for years.

Here we are, in the year of our Lord 2012, and still we have a so-called civilized people who follow a so-called "peaceful" religion, that is capable of a barbaric ruling such as this.

Yet more proof that indeed there are inferior people walking this earth. This wasn't decided by some backwards tribe in the desert; this came down from state leadership. More reason to not to look at Iran through the eyes of reason. Iran is fully and predictably capable of the worst our species can imagine.

This is why Israel is so antsy. It's surrounded by Neanderthals.

Nothing like a little social darwinism to beat the drums of war, huh Erod?

This probably has less to do with faith than the Iranian elite maintaining power. Iran is a theocracy, so the Muslim faith is the main way for the government to maintain legitimacy and control. Religious minorities might have similar rights and be included somewhat in the political process to keep down division, but they are tolerated only insofar they represent no threat. Apostasy is a completely different matter, though. When this man left the Muslim faith he left the main connection between him and the ruling elite. It's one thing to be born into a different community. It's a whole different matter to openly reject it. What we are seeing is not the carrying out of the will of Muhammad, but the fulfillment of the needs of the state.

Your missing the point. We're SUPPOSED to blame the Muslims, because they're Muslims!

Youcef Nadarkhani is blessed then

His first option was to convert back to Islam. When he refused, he was asked to declare Muhammad a prophet, and still he declined.

Welcome to earth... saying Muhammad wasn't a prophet doesn't get you much in life in aloooot of places.
They were going to let him off easy.
Smells like he went evangelical, the article didn't say.

This is why you must have SECULAR government.

Truly Sad that there are still entire societies dwelling in the dark ages.

Of course it's a problem with theocracy and not theology. Plenty of Muslims are born and raised in countries with secular governments and a culture founded in upholding religious freedom and they do just fine. Islam is not what these people say it is. What all this highlights is that theocracy is inherently this dangerous because religion is too easy and convenient excuse to exercise and proliferate power. Christianity had the SAME problems when it was entangled into theocracy. Since we ended it, it's been allowed to flourish free of government control and abuse and has become a lot better.

Those who argue against secular governments argue for this form of religious abuse.

I don't know about the "inferior people" part. Isn't the pastor Iranian too? How many people would have the courage to hold firm to his faith even where it might mean death? I'm not sure that I would.

Nuke Iran. I don't give a ****.

We talked of this mans unfortunate plight over in the ME forum 6 months ago so i'll just repeat what i said there.

The sentence is beyond deplorable. All people of all religions deserve the freedom to worship as they believe worldwide, and all people of all religions worldwide need to stand up loudly for this man.

Please sign the petition and please express your disgust to your representatives.

Overturn the Death Sentence of Iranian Christian Youcef Nadarkhani for "Apostasy" Petition

Fundamental Islam as interpreted by the Iranian Regime means this type of atrocity is quite common there.

They are medieval savages, nothing more!

If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which [is] as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; [Namely], of the gods of the people which [are] round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the [one] end of the earth even unto the [other] end of the earth; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely KILL him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to DEATH, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt STONE HIM with STONES, that he DIE; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Deuteronomy 13:6–10[SUP][48][/SUP]

If you are willing to admit that your God is barbaric then I guess you could be right... but to be fair on this particular issue there is little Quranic evidence to support the death for apostates ruling, there are many verses that mentions people leaving Islam and how God is not going to forgive them in the afterlife, it even mentions people who keep going back and forth between faith and disbelief without giving them any earthly punishments like it does with other major sins...

And as someone pointed out this is not unique to Iran, Saudi Arabia just 'pardoned' a man after 17 years of imprisonment because when he was an 18 year old on his way to a mosque he made a joke about Muhammad. I don't see you complaining or asking that the US cut its support be it political or economical with that country..

This is why Israel is so antsy. It's surrounded by Neanderthals.

Israel would have encountered the same (if not more deadly) opposition if it was forcibly created in a "densely populated" part the U.S., Arab opposition to Zionsm was rational and the thing is, no one at the time be it Zionist leaders or other western powers had any delusion as to what the natives' response is going to be.

I still think using those words is inflammatory and disrespectful. I am sorry but that's the way I feel.
yes, i hear you
don't find you credible, but i do hear you

That's absolutely correct.........

Oh man....so much fail in this post. I wonder how many times Abu Gharib photos were passed around among Islam websites and the same exact things were stated about Americans.

The acceptable way for Iran to handle it is - death by drone. And then claim it as an accident, again...and again...and again. This way is apparently not barbaric. High tech killing is the honorable way. Plus, you can always say, "Oops, sorry. We didn't mean to, but what the hell. It wasn't on purpose. We'll be more care when we kill people with drones in the future."

No Israel will just kill some scientists in their homes or cars or at work. No biggie.

What the hell business is it of anyone outside Iran? It's their culture and if you don't like it, too damn bad. Y'all should quit sticking your noses where they don't not belong.
