Iran court convicts Christian pastor convert to death

A trial court in Iran has issued its final verdict, ordering a Christian pastor to be put to death for leaving Islam and converting to Christianity, according to sources close to the pastor and his legal team.Supporters fear Youcef Nadarkhani, a 34-year-old father of two who was arrested over two years ago on charges of apostasy, may now be executed at any time without prior warning, as death sentences in Iran may be carried out immediately or dragged out for years.

Here we are, in the year of our Lord 2012, and still we have a so-called civilized people who follow a so-called "peaceful" religion, that is capable of a barbaric ruling such as this.

Yet more proof that indeed there are inferior people walking this earth. This wasn't decided by some backwards tribe in the desert; this came down from state leadership. More reason to not to look at Iran through the eyes of reason. Iran is fully and predictably capable of the worst our species can imagine.

This is why Israel is so antsy. It's surrounded by Neanderthals.

This probably has less to do with faith than the Iranian elite maintaining power. Iran is a theocracy, so the Muslim faith is the main way for the government to maintain legitimacy and control. Religious minorities might have similar rights and be included somewhat in the political process to keep down division, but they are tolerated only insofar they represent no threat. Apostasy is a completely different matter, though. When this man left the Muslim faith he left the main connection between him and the ruling elite. It's one thing to be born into a different community. It's a whole different matter to openly reject it. What we are seeing is not the carrying out of the will of Muhammad, but the fulfillment of the needs of the state.

Your missing the point. We're SUPPOSED to blame the Muslims, because they're Muslims!

His first option was to convert back to Islam. When he refused, he was asked to declare Muhammad a prophet, and still he declined.
Welcome to earth... saying Muhammad wasn't a prophet doesn't get you much in life in aloooot of places.
They were going to let him off easy.
Smells like he went evangelical, the article didn't say.

Of course it's a problem with theocracy and not theology. Plenty of Muslims are born and raised in countries with secular governments and a culture founded in upholding religious freedom and they do just fine. Islam is not what these people say it is. What all this highlights is that theocracy is inherently this dangerous because religion is too easy and convenient excuse to exercise and proliferate power. Christianity had the SAME problems when it was entangled into theocracy. Since we ended it, it's been allowed to flourish free of government control and abuse and has become a lot better.

Those who argue against secular governments argue for this form of religious abuse.
