PRINCETON, NJ -- The U.S. unemployment rate, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, is 9.0% in mid-February, up from 8.6% for January. The mid-month reading normally reflects what the U.S. government reports for the entire month, and is up from 8.3% in mid-January.

Its all in how the numbers are massaged. The reported 'unemployment rate' does nothing to discuss the ACTUAL unemployment problem in this country. When you doctor figures based on new reports, on calculations and projections of who may or may not be expected to leave the employment pool...at the end of the day all we are doing is discussing arbitrary numbers to be used by politicians to show how badly the other guys suck.

The Fed Govt's BLS has already collected the information regarding the second week in January thru the first week in February.

They are presently compiling the reports that will be available to us in early March, reports that will be titled "February", but, of course, will really be mostly for January.

So, should it be a surprise that unemployment rises in the month of January?

Of course not -- all the temp holiday jobs that ramped up since earlier in the fall are now over!

What we need most be concerned about is, not only the understandably rising unemployment figure, not only the true unemployment rate rarely reported to us by the media (which is currently around 14%), but the dismal quality of the jobs we've ended up with ever since everything came to a head back in September, 2008.
