(Updates with today’s deaths in fourth paragraph.)

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- China’s vice foreign minister, Zhai Jun, urged Syria to end violence and restore stability after a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad.

Zhai, speaking at a press conference in Damascus today, backed Assad’s proposed referendum on a new democratic constitution, set for Feb. 26, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

China and Russia vetoed a resolution at the United Nations Security Council earlier this month calling on Assad to step down in favor of an interim government that would hold elections. The UN estimated more than 5,400 Syrians had died by the end of last year as Assad cracked down on protests that began in March.

Looks like China will back the Arab League.......

I wonder if this will be a game changer?

Unlikely

You have to read what was said, and view it in a Chinese government manner

A call to end the violence does not mean that the government stops trying to enforce its rule. It can easily mean that the protesters stop their violence and their armed opposition to the government

I think the fact that they are backing Assad's proposed referendum, indicates that China will not accept the same sort of UN resolutions that it accepted in regards to Libya. After the US and Nato went beyond what the UN resolutions had intended, I strongly doubt China or Russia will go along with any similar ones.
