    ARGH!

Whenever this happens it really pisses me off to see people so "Oh my god, a mother killed her child!" Men abuse and kill wives and children all the time, but we think it is more horrific when a woman does it. Just like Nancy Grace does, the general public will crucify this woman.

I am in no way downplaying the awfulness of this crime, I would just like to see the same outrage and as much coverage when men do it.

When they grabbed up my second amendment I sat still and bit my tongue because, truth be told, Iím allergic to guns. But here we are, you with your cold hard fingers wrapped around the neck of my first amendment and Iíve got to shout as loud as I can, because if I donít, before you know it, you wonít let me say nothing at all"

Re: Another sicko drowns her kid

I'm beginning to wonder more and more: what help could she have gotten?

He says that he wanted her to seek help and she didn't want to.

    She rarely left the house.

So at what point does an unhinged, depressed and filicidal mother get the intervention or help she needs to stop?

I've read some articles recently that made me wonder if they choose not to get help because - if they're a stay at home mom especially: who will watch the kids while mommy checked into a psych ward? Can a woman admit herself if the duty she has to care for the kids is passsed onto the husband? What if he's unstable then? what about grandma, can grandma help if there is one? What if there's no one to rely on - will the chidlren be separated and put into separate foster homes? I can see the internal conflict that some mothers might have - they simply have no where to go, perhaps

I just don't see the help that's out there to prevent it - according to this article it happens a hell of a lot more often than we're aware of:

Moms killing their children more common than you think | Mom Houston | a Chron.com blog

ďIíd say a mother kills a child in this country once every three days, and thatís a low estimate,Ē says Cheryl Meyer, co-author of ďMothers Who Kill Their Children.Ē
So - where's the help? where's the help that they can find or be put into even against their will to save their children from theirselves? As it stands: unless you present a clear and present danger they can't put you away and give you care unless you consent to it. How's that for senseless - sort of works against the purpose of having treatment available, doesn't it?

I'm not trying to apply this TO the op: I'm just pondering this generally speaking - what help do we give for mothers? If a mother goes to therapy to talk about ti - and tells her therapist - that mother knows she will have her children taken away. Maybe the idea of keeping it to herself and trying to deal with it internally is actually better than someone ELSE taking her children away?

We're not talking about level-headed people, here, you know - I don't think many of us could likely understand *why* - but I think understanding why is essential to seeing the signs and improving our care system.

People were pretty outraged when the guy killed himself and his two kids recently.

I thought that mental health care was getting better in this country, but there does not seem to be any parity with physical disorders. I am NOT saying that mental health disorders make people violent. Tonight in several posts I have seen mental health issues that are going unhelped (if that is a word). From "bullycide" to these moms killing kids, not just mental health care, but something to help check yourself. Something to help when it is rough. We claim to be a compassionate society but where is it? Can you just put a hand on someone's shoulder, say "how are you" with sincerity in your voice, call the authorities when you hear someone being thrown against the wall in the apartment next door, or offer to watch someone's kids while they go for a walk? Lets all do that instead of walking by the homeless guy huddled by the heating grate outside the state office building.

Look. I am mentally ill and I do not care if you are female or male: you kill your own kids? you should DIE A beast in the wild takes care of their young and so should you. If not death? You should be locked in a hospital and never ever get out.

BTW, it sounds as if someone would have got her help? This may have never happened. Why in the hell did the husband not get her help? If anybody here is reading and your S.O. is refusing to go outside the home? Take their ass to a frigging doctor or the ER

    Some do.

No "we" don't. As individuals, many of us are compassionate. As a "society," go **** yourself.

I don't know how to do that multi-quote thing yet as I only joined this site the other day... but Neo, it pisses me off how women are made out to be so much more horrific when they kill a child than men are. It sickens me how we don't support these women who are doing their best and then when they fail in some way we wonder why. Where is the mental health parity? There are long waiting lists for seeing mental health professionals, prescriptions are ridiculously costly, and we still stigmatize by thinking people with mental illnesses are more violent than the general population and do not have worthwhile contributions to society.

That said, yes we did see a recent incident with a man killing his boys, but who do you remember more Susan Smith or Jerry William Jones, Andrea Yates or Charles Rothenberg?
