US carrier crosses Hormuz against Iran threats

Sorry to say it but around the first week of March the fit will hit the shan. I do hope I am wrong though I don't believe I will be. Washington has been pounding the war drugs. The same neocons that supported our invasion of Iraq are screaming for war with Iran. I'm afraid this time it'll get ugly and Americans will really understand war for the first time.

"If you listen to the (Iranian) rhetoric ... you might think that there are some tensions," Admiral Troy Shoemaker, commander of the carrier strike group nine, told Reuters.

"We obviously pay attention to that as we go through but I think we are conducting the transit as part of our normal business ... Our intention is to keep it professional and routine."

Iran is at loggerheads with the West over its disputed uranium enrichment program. It says its nuclear program is for generating electricity.

( Iran won't make the first move)

this will happen again and again until we make it a national priority to innovate a different transportation fuel.

we made it to the moon in 1969 with computers that had less processing power than a cell phone. this is a problem that we can and should solve. imagine if the money that is spent to respond to the symptoms was actually applied to treating the disease.

I hope you are wrong too. I really dont see it happening. For all their bluster, Iran is no match for our Navy and Air Force. I doubt there would be a land invasion. I suspect at the most there is some posturing on both sides. Ahmadinejad may be a whack job but he is no idiot. He cant POSSIBLY conceive that provoking an actual war would be beneficial.

Iran is saber rattling for one reason and one reason only. It drives oil up. Their economy is mainly dependent on their oil sales. Notice when they started this is up pretty heavy? It was when oil futures were on the decline. They know by doing this, it will manipulate the market and drive the cost per barrel up. Which it has. The hits on Israelis by their surrogates further agitates it.

If they were at all serious, they would have hit the carrier group as it transited the straight.

No question about it if it is an air war. If it became a land war it would be quite a bit different, I think.

Call me paranoid and as a guy once said, "I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?". I do think a false flag attack is possible. I don't trust the government but we have a history of false flag attacks leading us into a war. A false flag attack would seal the deal for Obama's re-election. It would galvanize the public and divert their attention away from being raped and robbed by the the powers that be. In the short term it would improve the economy. I'm not saying a false flag will happen but I am saying I do not trust my government.

Wars have started for less than sabre rattling. Everything he does seems to provoke.

but other than purely political...what 'gain' would there be for us to engage them? there are a lot of things I dont like about Obama...I dont think that is a shocking revelation...but I cant fathom he would engage the US in a war for the sole purpose of reelection.

Except he knows that mere sabre rattling wont get the US to invade. Like others have said, these people are not suicidal. They enjoy their power and they'd like to keep it, and they can't do that if they attack the United States.

Thats right...I 'liked' your comment. I hope that makes you feel dirty! ;)

But the point here is that under international Law shipping can pass through the Straits of Hormuz there is an international area there!

Therefore Iran is the only one beating the drums of war by breaking the Law and prohibiting or even warning vessels to cross.

How many ships have been turned back?

That's not the point either.

The threatening coming from Iran is wrong! Like they own the Strait of Hormuz!!!!!

How is that different from preventing Iran from selling its oil?

Its myopic to think that Iran will close the Straits which could easily and quickly be cleared.

If Israel attacks Iran, Iran will blow up all the Saudi oil installations and take 10 million bpd off the market.

This is just another example of that cowboy George Bush and his Gunboat Diplomacy....Ooops, thats right, Obama is president now, let me amend that.... This is just another example of Obama showing bold and decisive leadership in the face of international danger.

But in the middle of it all is possible provocation or outright aggression from Israel. Netanyahu is a madman and it seems most Israelis don't support him, but that crazy bastard is dying to go to war with Iran. Saudi Arabia would tacitly approve or already has for all we know. We know that there is no love lost between Netanyahu and Obama. That's to Obama's credit. But to be honest I am not aware of any head of state in Europe that hearts Netanyahu. Netanyahu could tell everyone to kiss sweet **** all and push the button. We would be involved at that point even if involvement was seriously against our plans and desires.

I'm suspicious of everything. I don't think Obama wants to go to war with Iran...so...will Iran "provoke an attack?" You know, one where we say they attacked us? What's that' called? A Black Flag operation? If he just decides to deploy U.S. troops, I think that would cost him the election...unless they "attacked" us first.

My scheming little mind also tells me that the UN won't act...because Russia or China will veto any attempt at that. Then, my scheming little mind tells me that we'll be negotiating behind the scenes with both of these countries to get their approval to a UN force. Hang on to your wallets, taxpayers!! (Oops. Too late.)

Absolutely I agree that it is myopic!

Then Iran should stop the threatening

I say to Iran : Shut up or put up with the consequences!

False Flag. Yeah, I mentioned it earlier in post number 8. I am not one to quote myself, but in this one instance it's easier to just cut and paste from 8 above.

It seems we agree. As horrible as it might be to believe our government would do such a thing, we have a long history of our government false flagging the U.S. into wars.

Israel began threatening Iran in 2002.. Ariel Sharon crowed to the press that as soon as Bush finished in Iraq, "they" would bomb Iran.

Sadly Maggie I don't see any powder blue berets soldiers there any time soon :(

I don't think it is going to go that way.

I'm not a big Obama fan, but unless you can point out where the Obama administration has spearheaded the ground invasion of not one but two countries, the comparision is nothing more than partisian hackery. The problem of Iran is very real and a concern to more than just the USA and Israel. Many ME countries are upset by the direction Iran is taking. Let's discuss the problem at hand. Political potshots don't add much to the conversation.
