Egypt's Brotherhood says it should govern

Turkey is looking shakier all the time. After Syria......

50 years ago, Baghdad was a vacation destination. Not everything stays the same, Jet, and the Middle East is changing almost by the day, and not in a terribly good way.

Why do you think Turkey is shakey.. Their economy is rock solid.

It is one of the oldest and and largest Islamist movements, maybe not 100's of year got a bit carried away there, but it's been around since 1928.

Right.. I would have guessed 1930.. but you are probably more accurate.

I doubt it.. Israel just isn't that important.

If Israel wasn't that important, all the surrounding countries would not desire her total destruction. Obviously, something about Israel is important.

Except the notion that all surrounding countries desire Israel's total destruction is an oft repeated lie... and serves an obvious political purpose.

What? According to Arab Propagandists, the 'Zionist Entity' is the cause of all the misery known to man. As long as they have Israel to bash, they'll never be short of an audience.

Actually it is anything but a lie. Half those governments only stay in power because they use the Israeli boogeyman to whip their ignorant populations into a frenzy every so often. And let's face it, these folks are ignorant.

Oh, those nefarious and sneaky Jews! Is there no end to their shenanigans? Tricking Arabs to attack them is surely one of their most dastardly deeds ever!

Holy......we agree on something. What a way to start the weekend!

You would be amazed at how little the Arabs think about Israel unless there is an attack on Lebanon or some new abuse of the Palestinians.

Who is ignorant???

What are you talking about? Who has attacked Israel?

49 years ago, Baghdad was in the middle of a CIA-assisted bloody coup (the Ramadan Revolution) which installed the Ba'ath Party (Saddam Hussein's alma mater, altho he did not rise to a position of power until another coup 5 years later (the 17 July Revolution (1968)), then to the presidency some 11 years after that.)

Vacation spot for a mercenary or a CIA operative, perhaps. . . . .

YOu are correct, of course. Six million Jews decided to make war on 200 million arabs both in 1967 and then a few years later, with the certain knowledge that, unlike the arabs, if they lost they would cease to exist as a nation.

Apparently those Jews, in addition to being nefarious, are also incredibly stupid! Fortunately for them, they are also excellent soldiers.

Well of course, they have the word Muslim in their name so they must be devils.

The truth is that the MB is rather moderate by Middle East standards. The real risk is that they will have to partner with actual militant Muslim groups in order to form a government.

Just out of curiousity, what does being 'moderate by Middle East standards' actually mean? That they'd rather bleed Israel to death with terrorist attacks and rocket launches than actually engage in all out war?

The Arab Street is incredibly ignorant. That isn't even debatable.

The Arab Spring is just a new name for the war on terror. John McCain boasts about the endgame. Obama is nothing except a NeoCon in sheeps clothing.

"US Senator John McCain, chairmen of the International Republican Institute, an organization dedicated to fomenting extraterritorial seditious unrest and revolution throughout the world, openly said of the unrest his IRI had helped fund starting in Egypt, ravaging Libya, and now consuming Syria, "I would be a little less cocky in the Kremlin with my KGB cronies today if I were Vladimir Putin. I would be a little less secure in the seaside resort [of] President Hu and a few men who govern and decide the fate of 1.3 billion people."

I am half Egyptian and I visited Cairo a few weeks ago. I had the opportunity to have a great insight in the way the people there think, and especially what's going on there... My dad voted for the Liberty Party, and so did many people in his neighbourhood. The truth is, the Muslim Brotherhood has most support in the countryside, where the people aren't as educated, and think of elections as an opportunity to get payed to vote for a certain party. The second Mubarak left, the MB went to these "poor" farmers and started advertising their party as being the right way forward for Egypt. As the MB is the only party that has been around for hundreds of years and has a lot of charity work, the people are already accustomed to them. This results in people voting for what they know... You can't expect people to vote for something that's only been around for a few months. As i was driving through Cairo's chaotic traffic, i saw a modern-looking shop with a great lot of people inside. I asked the driver what it was, and he said it was a new shop the MB had established that sells items extra-cheap, bought of local Egyptian producers. This is the reason why the MB is so successful, it responds to the basic needs of the people which is cheap clothing items etc. In my opinion, it will take approximately 8 years until the entire country is educated on democracy, and true democratic votes can be held.
The Liberty Party my dad voted for, obtained approximately 8.9%. This in my opinion, is good, as now nothing can be kept secrete from the public or at least nothing that happens in parliament.

Man, that is truly a shame, I am sorry for your father having to go through this. But isn't it amazing, that the way the MB 'buy's' votes there, by targeting the poor, uneducated, and plying them with freebies, and promises of better things to come, sound strikingly familiar to that of democrat/progressives over here....I guess minds like that think alike.

There will never be another Caliphate unless it is an honorarium.. The Arab states each have their own interests.. Its not a problem that you should worry about.

And your background to make such a statement is?

Decades of experience in the Arab world and a long memory..

The last guy who declared himself Caliph was chased off the Arabian Peninsula two weeks later.

My father lives in Germany and as he is a doctor, he is actually right now sending medical aid to protestors in Tahrir square. Funnily enough, a minor political party actually asked him if he wanted to run for presidency. He and most Egyptians look incredibly optimistic into the future. When the curfews were in power, my grandfather had no idea what they were about (he is 96) and he went out the house past 9 p.m. The police threatened to beat him if he didnt go back inside, he was very confused untill a group of young men came and helped him along. They escorted him to his appartment, whilst engaging in a fight with the police. I think the Egyptians accomplished something amazing, and the feeling of national unity is greater than ever before. As i said, in 8 years or so the people will know that they are free and that they have nothing more to fear. Untill then, the people wont let themselves be repressed furhter, for they learnt one thing... Even the most ruthless leaders can be overthrown.
