Washington State Approves Gay Marriage | Fox News
Washington state approves gay marriage
Published February 08, 2012 | Associated Press

Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

The Washington House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote. The state Senate approved the measure last week. And Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the measure into law next week.

However, gay couples can't begin walking down the aisle just yet.

The proposal would take effect 90 days after the governor signs, but opponents have promised to fight gay marriage with a ballot measure that would allow voters to overturn the legislative approval.

If opponents gather enough signatures to take their fight to the ballot box, the law would be put on hold pending the outcome of a November election.

The Republicans are trying to push the right-wing to the back burner to try to make up with moderates, so if the DNC floats some gay stuff, the right-wing will lash out, and the GOP will have to take a stance. It will be interesting to see how they play it.

God I am so tired of this debate. It is time that SCOTUS rules on this once and for all.

When this reaches the Supreme Court, they're gonna have a helluva time rejecting the Full Faith and Credit provision.

Same sex marriage will be legal everywhere in the US in ten years or less.....that's my prediction.

Has to reach them first. They don't even have to take the 9th decision up is they don't want to. Which controversies they decide is almost entirely within their control.

Which is imo dumb for certain issues that affect the whole country. Gay marriage, abortion, and the Obamacare mandate all need to be settled once in for all. Yes I know, abortion was already ruled on but not in a way that was final. All other cases imo can just wait.

I don't mean to argue but what isn't final about the abortion ruling

The decision that they made in Roe vs Wade wasn't actually a ruling for or against abortion. It was a ruling on a persons privacy. If a states ever finds a way around that then the states could make all kinds of laws against abortion or for abortion and we would have a huge mess. Edit note: If I recall correctly SCOTUS even gave them a hint as to how they could do this.

One more thing that I would like SCOTUS to rule on is gun rights. It is BS that practically every single state has different laws when it comes to guns and gun ownership and at least half of them don't recognize another states permits/laws. That needs to be taken care of. Particularly in light of NYC's recent dive into the sewers regarding this issue.

SCOTUS ruled that abortion was covered under privacy. That seems pretty final to me.

Its not. Find a way around that privacy clause and all bets are off. Again, they didn't rule on abortion itself. They just ruled the a woman has a right to privacy when it comes to abortion....pretty much like anyone else does when it comes to medical procedures. And even that can be violated given the right circumstances.

I wish you good luck in finding a way around the privacy clause. The feds can't even do that without starting up a complete shirt storm.

I actually do know of a way. But I don't plan on posting it anywhere as I don't wish to give the idea to anyone. I believe in the woman's right to choose based upon her own beliefs and not someone elses.

As for it starting up a complete "shirt" storm...since when do those that are against abortion care about that?

I don't doubt you found one, I just doubt you're the first person to find one. However the problem is: Can it pass constitutional muster?

Only on this forum could a discussion on a state allowing same sex marriage turn into a debate on abortion.

This is not something likely to go to court.

I think DOMA deserves an ass-kicking from Full Faith and Credit. This particular case probably wont make it to SCOTUS though, I agree.

DOMA will got to SCOTUS, and will be struck down more than likely.

O yes. Every time a state approves it, some jackass will appeal it.

I hate to burst your bubble but there is already a move underway for a referendum in November and no marriage will take place until that is decided.........I live here in Washington and I know

I've actually been trying to decide between moving to New Hampshire or Washington. However this turns out will probably decide where I move.

I have no idea how New Hampshire is but if it were up to me I would suggest you move to New Hampshire. I've lived in Washington. It's almost as bad as California.

I was referring to states like New York, which have enacted laws allowing gay marriage.

Bad in what way?

Bad in what way?

Think about all the lovely laws that California has. When I lived there everytime California enacted a law Washington consistently enacted a similar law. In fact this law allowing gay marriage is the first that I know of that Washington didn't follow California's lead.

Also most of the people that I came across were stuck up snobs.

Has not been the case. There is pretty much zero constitutional basis to argue that the states cannot make laws allowing a group of people to get married.
