what percentage of "veterans" do you think spent time "witnessing death and dodging bullets"?.

other posters have this right. this is feel-good-election-year-abuse-of-the-military-BS from a president who cares far more about his political career than the troops.

    wow.
Claiming credit for the GI Bill is pretty lame.
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.

So a few things on this...

    1. Are the 20,000 Jobs that these veterans going to be filling things that are actually needed to be done? Or are we essentially "Creating" work for them to be able to "Create" a position that they'd then fill?

    2. If the above question is answered "no, they're not really needed", are we just essentially extending the amount of time that we're paying Veterans for serving the U.S. we're just doing so in a way that isn't placing them in the potential way of harm?

Veterans already get a preferenace when applying for Federal Jobs, allowing Veterans to bypass equally or even more qualified applicants on certification lists for job openings (not saying that's a bad thing, just stating). I don't see a lot of point in manufacturing 20,000 busy work jobs, on tax payer dollars, simply to create a place where Veterans can continue to be paid for a bit after they get out of the serivce. I understand the desire and need to help Veterans, but unless these 20,000 jobs are ones that are actually needed and necessary, it seems that this is simply fixing one problem (potential veterans out of work) by creating more problems (creation of government jobs without much of a purpose which tend to be hard to get rid of; increasing the amount we're spending on the federal beuracracy).

i agree, i would like to know specifics on the types of jobs. i also don't really understand why so many veterans are out of work, given the preferences you described.
