To most of you that doesn't sound like a big deal, but crawfish is a delicacy and it's not cheap--15 LBS.s runs about 40 bucks and that sounds like a lot, but it's not.

Anyway...while I was waiting, a dude came in and bought 60 pounds of live crawfish--uncooked--and I-be-damned if he didn't whip out a welfare card to pay for it. I was so damn mad I could have knocked the rest of his teeth out of his mouth.
So a person on foodstamps doesn't deserve crawfish? You have no idea what this persons normal spending habits are and yet you condemn em for buying what might have been a "splurge" the same as yours.

I absolutely hate this mentality that if someone is on foodstamps/welfare then they shouldn't be allowed ANYTHING but the most basics of basics.

There are a few stores in another town near me that will take food stamp cards for beer and smokes.
It's messed up, but it does happen.

I agree it does happen and it is messed up. If I lived around there I would report the company for fraud.

    Everyone already knows about it.
Hell you can go into these places and gamble your pay check away.
Those video slot machines, they have those.

It's illegal to pay out cash, supposed to be store credit only, but they do and no one cares.
Not even the police, city council, county, etc.

You don't go to the local authorities for something that is federal. You go to the appropriate state or federal authority. If you get ignored keep going up the chain of command until you get someone that will do something about it.

Great move by the House of Representatives. Now they just need to change the food stamps program so you show up and pick up bags of groceries rather than being given carte blanche to purchase whatever you want. "Ok Mrs. Smith, you've got a family of four so here's your food allotment for the week, and since your son is lactose intolerant, we've replaced the appropriate items. See you next Thursday."

I'd favor that over the current 'buy cigs and energy drinks - nevermind the food' - my solution to this issue is to have stores that offer goods which are all pre-approved and foodstamps would be in-store credit at these stores only.

I see more people buying that than apples and oranges. . . hence why congress and state governments have woken up and realized what's going on.

People abuse the privilidge and freedom given so it gets taken away.

The American Spirit dies in a person the moment they start taking money from the Government to begin with, so that's a moot point in this discussion. I'm much more interested in ensuring these wastes of flesh and oxygen aren't spending any more of my money (via taxes) on crap than is absolutely necessary.

Swinging the pendulum to the other extreme doesn't help anything either. They just need to go to a system where if the items are on a approved list you get it, and if they are not you don't get them or have to pay for them yourself. IIRC that would like WIC.

I like the idea as well where they wire the money directly to the apartment and utlilities.

The ATM card etc. is convenient, but obviously too convienient.
