Planned Parenthood Federation of America may have already replaced most of the $680,000 in funding it lost from Susan G. Komen for the Cure for its breast- cancer prevention programs, the group said today. Riding a wave of Internet-based appeals, Planned Parenthood received pledges of $400,000 from 6,000 donors as of 2 p.m. yesterday, according to Tait Sye, a spokesman. Also, the Amy and Lee Fikes’ Foundation, run by the chief executive officer of closely-held Bonanza Oil Co. in Dallas, has promised a $250,000 gift to provide immediate help, according to a statement on the Planned Parenthood website.
Planned Parenthood, now in the process of updating those numbers, yesterday said it was starting an “emergency fund” to fill the funding gap. The decision by the Dallas-based Komen group has spurred a tsunami of online comment and petitions that added political fuel to the dispute and involved corporate funders for Komen, including Yoplait, the French yogurt maker.

...top public health official, Mollie Williams, resigned in protest immediately following the Komen board's decision to cut off Planned Parenthood. Williams, who served as the managing director of community health programs, was responsible for directing the distribution of $93 million in annual grants...... John Hammarley, who until recently served as Komen's senior communications adviser and who was charged with managing the public relations aspects of Komen's Planned Parenthood grant, said that Williams believed she could not honorably serve in her position once Komen had caved to pressure from the anti-abortion right. "Mollie is one of the most highly respected and ethical people inside the organization, and she felt she couldn't continue under these conditions.

Somehow I don't think losing funding for the Komen group (many have contacted the group saying they will not be donating to the organizations in the future) and increasing contributions to Planned Parenthood was whatKaren Handel, Komen's senior vice president of public policy, had in mind when she blocked PP's grant.

A friend who works at Planned Parenthood locally said they have new pledges for giving totalling just under triple the dollar amount they were receiving from the Komen grant already and they are still pouring in.

If that's true, they were certainly lazy with their fundraising efforts while they had the Komen Grant. They should probably send Komen a thank-you note.

Sounds really great, do you know if this means planned parenthood be weened of the big government nipple also anytime soon?
