A 48-year-old Florida businessman has legally adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend as his daughter in what one attorney is calling an attempt to shield assets in a wrongful death civil suit that has entered a "legal twilight zone," according to a judge.

Ms. Hutchins has testified in a deposition that she started dating Mr. Goodman in 2009, and it appears to be undisputed that they are still in a relationship today."

Should the man's assets be protected?

be funny if they avoid civil penalty, but see jail time for incest

You're joking, right? There's no law against adopting one's girlfriend...as stupid as that sounds. And since they aren't biologlically related, in any case it wouldn't be incest.

there are laws preventing sexual relations with your kids - even fully grown kids

holy ****, absolutely not. in fact, he should be jailed for attempting to defraud the family of the man he killed.

he is exploiting the laws, as they are written
certainly not as they were intended

so the original understanding of the intent of the laws is what matters?

I love that notion!!! Lets apply that to all facets of government!

It looks like there should be a waiting period before an adopted adult can receive the same protections as someone's birth children.

That's original but nevertheless tricky. I hope the court would nail him.

Where is the problem here?

the problem is an individual is trying to game the system to prevent liability for damages he inflicted via his own negligence.

that link doesn't tell me anything, which states?

It doesn't mention the states, only that many states also apply incest laws to non-blood relations including stepparents, step-siblings, and in-laws.

It provides a citation if you really wish to pursue it.

I read the article. The brief in the beginning didn't explain as well as the article. You are right. Slimy.
