Yeah, I really wanted another Mid East notch in our belt. It would have looked cool when we were bragging to the rest of the world.

Yeah, the godless commies would have halted the spread of radical Islam in its tracks, but America screwed the pooch.

That's neither here, nor there; however, if not for American intervention, the Soviets would have conquered Afghanistan. The Mujas were losing bad, until we decided to become more involved.

Afghanistan isn't in the ME. Buy a map.

But we did help. we were for Islamics before we were against them.

Also, it was quite costly for the Russians before we interfered. Winning doesn't mean won. They never had to beat the Soviets; they only had to make it too costly.

Actually we didn't give training and money to the Taliban, nor AQ, but don't let the facts get in the way.

Care to show us the numbers, illustrating how costly it was for the Soviets, before American intervention? Thanks in advance.

You might read what I actually said.

As the US was there from the begining, that's kind of a silly question don't you think?

Former CIA director and previous Secretary of Defense Robert Gates wrote in his memoirs From the Shadows that the U.S. intelligence services began to provide financial aid to the rebel factions in Afghanistan six months before the Soviet deployment. On July 3, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed an executive order authorizing the CIA to conduct covert propaganda operations against the communist regime.[44]

The were, and now they aren't. Mission accomplished.
