Bruins MVP Tim Thomas skips Obama White House event; why he shouldn

Man talk about a slap in the face to the President. I mean don't get me wrong, Thomas has to right to express his opinion and all but his hate for the President is that high that he wouldn't support his team on a very traditional event. They mention in the article that some Nascar drivers refuse to meet the president (which doesn't surprise me considering most drivers are deep rooted southerners).

Some people just don't get how elections work. If you respect our country and our constitution, then you must respect and abide by the outcome of an election, especially our most important one. You can disagree with policy, but disrespect the office and why do you call yourself American?

NASCAR's not a real sport anyway.

I think he's a partisan idiot for letting his political ideology prevent him from attending a non-political event, but also that he has a right to his opinion and that if he really does feel that strongly about it, meh, whatever, don't go.

/shrug

Yeah. The article says that he is a Glen Beck follower.....

Figures

Um, wrong.

But anyway, this is such a non issue, I was a fan of Thomas yesterday, and I'm a fan of him today. He is a great goalie, the best in the league right now, and that's all that matters. I wonder how many people hating on Thomas have actually watched him play on a regular basis.

No one is questioning how great of a player he is. It is his unwillingness to go meet the President at a non political event that is remarkable. Hate the man's policies but don't be disrespectful to the office. Can you imagine if Kobe refuse to meet with Bush after they won the title?

This athlete is not even a pimple on the ass of the body politic.

There is not any real slap in the face to the president. Its a bad joke on the jerk without any common manners or decency.

How many people have actually watched him play? On TV? Live?

This has nothing to do with "supporting his team." He holds deep ideological and political differences with the President. He has the right to not participate in the event. It has jack to do with bailing out on his team.

I care less. The man doesn't want to go and as far as I know, the team isn't upset about it. The political lean of Timmy doesn't matter to me. All that matters is how he does in the goal on a gameday.

I had absolutely no problem with him not attending. It was well within his rights, and I see no reason why he should not skip the event to protest the policies of Obama. I think no less of him for doing this.

However:

“I believe the federal government has grown out of control, threatening the rights, liberties, and property of the people,” Goalie Tim Thomas said in a statement. The decision to stay away, Thomas said, “was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country.”

Seriously, you made it about politics in your opening sentence. Nothing wrong with it being about politics, but don't try and deny it.

Nothing where Obama is concerned is non-political.

Why is the word "hate" always used when making a referrence to Obama?

Is it possible to disagree with Obama without hating him?

So Michael Jordan is a partisan idiot?

Um, wrong.

I have watched him on a regular basis (I am a Bruins fan) but I am not hating on him.

Question, are you a fan of Michael Jordan?

As a native of NH, I loved the Bruins run through the playoffs and will forever think that Thomas was a primary reason for the Bruins hoisting the Stanley Cup. As an athlete, I also know that sometimes you will receive honors from politicians you don't personally approve of or agree with. As a marathon runner and triathlete, I frequently have awards presented to me by office holders whom I disagree with or downright despise.

Saying that, I make the decision to leave politics off the podium and receive the awards, being careful to prevent, if possible, looking too chummy with the politician lest some photographer gets off a shot making it look like that I somehow like or agree with that politician. It is a decision that I make and I am comfortable with it.

I understand Thomas' situation. President Obama is a president whose personal politics are at odds with Thomas' political philosophy. I can say that I agree with him. Having said that, I would not have made the decision that he did. I would have been there. However, I can totally respect the decision that he made not to. President Obama is highly partisan, and this is something that makes some people very uncomfortable, as it obviously did with Thomas. Thomas has the right not to attend if he does not wish to. If his teammates accept the explanation and reasons, then, quite frankly, none of the rest of us really have any right to criticize him for doing something that is consistant with his own personal conscience and his rights as a citizen of the United States of America.

I have watched him on a regular basis (I am a Bruins fan) but I am not hating on him.

Question, are you a fan of Michael Jordan?

Not really, I couldn't care less about basketball.

Most of us respect the OFFICE, we just have no respect for the OCCUPANT OF IT. You couldn't pay me enough money to meet that worthless waste of flesh and oxygen, Mr. Obama. Nor would you find me even on a public tour of the White House during his administration. As a Conservative and a Boston Bruins fan, I have absolutely no problem with what Tim Thomas did yesterday.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it's the color of his skin that makes the traditional respect for the office impossible for some Americans.

Wait, did I just here someone scream out, "You lie!"?

He's the POTUS, nothing that he does is non-political. It's essentially a photo-op event for the POTUS to get some face time and news coverage in the local media of wherever the team is from. I have no issue with Tim Thomas choosing not to allow himself to be used in that way.

In fact I thought I heard last night that several NBA players DID choose not to attend these things during the Bush Presidency.

Above is an example of what I was talking about.

That much hatred and vitriol can only come from a deeper place.

Go ahead, call the race card. Do it! Do it! Your party demands it!

The proof that Thomas is just another moronic wingnut is his claim that his non-attendance was not political

What a maroon!!

Yep. It's called having PRINCIPLES, and for the small percentage of us here in the United States who still live by them, it can be very inconvenient at times. We just understand that when you lay down in a cesspool you can't come away smelling like roses. It's just basic common sense, reason, and logic.
