Exclusive: Gingrich Lacks Moral Character to Be President, Ex-Wife Says - Yahoo! News

Newt Gingrich lacks the moral character to serve as President, his second ex-wife Marianne told ABC News, saying his campaign positions on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of family values do not square with what she saw during their 18 years of marriage.

In her first television interview since the 1999 divorce, to be broadcast tonight on Nightline, Marianne Gingrich, a self-described conservative Republican, said she is coming forward now so voters can know what she knows about Gingrich.

This could either be the case of an angry ex or a ****ty Gringrich. Given his history with wives, it's probably 40%-60%.

This is pretty similar to the story that his first wife tells, which adds some credibility.

Seriously? You guys are using ex-wives as character witnesses? Im gonna go out on a limb and say well over 50% of divorced men (and women!) would be disqualified if that were the criteria to determine fitness. Lame. Just lame.

Sleezy women who are now estranged from Sleezy Gingrich states that Gingrich is sleezy when it comes to women.

Also reports that water is wet, ice is cold, and that people enjoy making money.

True but timing is everything in politics, and this could very well end his candidacy.

Tim-

The second one (the one who is talking now) had an affair with him while he was with wife #1.

got it...so just the second and third are sleazy, but not the first.

I don't have a much higher opinion of people who screw with a married person then I do of people who screw around while married.

Though I realized my post came off as plural when my mind was thinking primarily the 2nd wife.

The timing in and of itself is a bit adding to her sleeziness factor to be truthful.

That said, I think this would be more damaging during the general election than during the primary. You tend to have a slightly more informed electorate in a primary then in a general, and I don't think there's a ton of people that this interview is really going to shock. Its the type of thing that would hurt him with people who are on the fence about him for other reasons perhasp...but not likely something to knock off support from those who do like him.

I think the only reason this would even somewhat hurt him in the primary is because of two reasons:

1) Santorum is still in and his Iowa win gave him momentum that was unexpected

2) Similar to the Cain issue, focus will have to be given to this as well as time and attention which takes away from the things Newt does that has garnered him the support he's gotten so far.

I think it won't be good for his campaign and could harm it, but I think it'd likely be more devestating in the general than the primary.

We have had at least 52 years where moral character had nothing to do with the presidency. Maybe more but I haven't heard much about the presidents before that.

If this revelation is the supposed blockbuster exclusive, then please excuse my loud snoring. I was hoping she'd at least reveal he punched kittens.

It will hurt him in Florida, not in South Carolina. My 2c:2wave:

Am I the only one who thinks this will not be that much of a "bombshell," and at the end of the day it won't have much negative effect?

There is no news here.

And here I thought a lack of moral character was a prerequisite to becoming president. Who knew?

Sure is ironic that we have so many presidential candidates with "family value" issues from the party that claims to be the one with "family values"!

Cain is out and Gingrich will be after Florida. Who will be next?

Probably Rick Santorum, who is an excellent example of family values. Mitt Romney is as well.

Whoever is left standing all Obama will have to do is rebrand some of the same ****.

I'm older than dirt and remember dozens of times that Newt was on the front of tabloids after being caught in his many, many extra-martial trysts. I seriously belly-laugh every time I see Newt trying to sell his commitment to 'family values'. They may as well trust Hugh Hefner saying he has 'family values' because Newt and Hefner are birds of a feather.

Wait....I thought Gingrich was a conservative who espoused strong values.

The idea that Gingrich has had marital issues isn't anything new, and he's far from the first politician to go on and on about family values while failing to exhibit them in his own life. Given the fact that he left his first wife for while she was being treated for cancer to be with Marianne prior to the conclusion of the divorce, she doesn't have any moral high ground to stand on.

She promised she could end his run with one interview, but unless there's something in the interview that Yahoo! didn't mention then she fell far short in my opinion.

As an aside, I strongly disagree with Marianne's assertion that an open marriage isn't a marriage.

Although I am not a Gingrich supporter mostly because he is a republican progressive, I am not inclined to take at face value the word of a scorned ex as gospel. Shame on ABC for rolling in the gutter, and I feel sorry that Mary Anne has so much bitterness over a decade later.
