Does that law date back to the Civil War ideals and Virginia attempting to outlaw yankees from running for President in their previously Confederate state?
I don't understand this post. Are only people who are Virginians allowed on the Virginia ballot?

Paul and Romney both figured out Virginias apparently OH so complex election laws...as has every other major candidate from BOTH parties throughout the last 150 years or so...

You realize that Gingrich lives in Virginia, right?

    Why not?

States have to have a way to control ballot access - otherwise the ballot would look like the phone book.
I'm not really concerned with the ballot reading like a phone book. At this point primary ballots could probably be digitalized, which would make finding the candidate you came to vote for easy.

The failure to meet a signature requirement shows a stunning lack of organization, but the requirement should serve an important purpose, because it limits the right of people to pick the candidate of their choice. I'm not sure what purpose the signature requirement serves in this day and age, when it probably doesn't take long at all to craft a ballot form.

Seems to me the purpose is to weed out less serious candidates. And it worked.

Because Gingrich, Santorum, and Perry are not serious candidates?

So you don't believe that people should have the right to vote for anyone they see fit?

Every other state seems to have figured out a way to get the right guys on the ballot.

    Excuse me!

Perry is a three time elected Governor of the second largest, in area and population, State in the Union and is the 13th Largest economy in the world. The State of Texas is more successful than the other 49 ( 56 in some circles) combined.
I came into this world fighting, screaming and covered in someone else's blood. I have no problem going out the same way.

Its not the states responsibility to get anyone on the ballot...it is the responsibility of the candidate to follow the rules and file within appropriate deadlines with appropriate numbers of signtures. It prevents people like you or ne from saying HEY!!! I wanna be on the ballot!!! Add me! It requires the tiniest amount of application of effort on behalf of candidates.
