This very reminiscent of the Oceanos sinking off of S. Africa. Luckily, due to a a brave guitarist and cruise director, no lives were lost. Sadly, Captain Yiannis Avranas received no punishment and actually went on to skipper a ferry in Greece.
I doubt the Italians will be so lenient. The captain is scum. By no means do I expect a "captain to go down in with the ship" in the modern era of sailing but to be the first one off and actually wanting to run away is wholeheartedly unacceptable.
I'd also bet the requirements for a muster drill will go from "24 hours from departure" to "prior to departure" when this is all said and done. Strange though, most cruise lines conduct this drill once the lines are are off the dock.
