That poor excuse for a ships Captain deserves anything, and everything coming his way. My condolences to anyone connected with DP that knew, or had anyone on that ship...Oh, and BTW, the dumb asses on Fox's morning show made a blunder yesterday, saying that the first guy that died was the violin player, and the bimbo made light saying that he went back to retrieve his instrument, that was wrong! Reports were that he was staying behind helping women and children get their life jackets on....I actually yelled at my radio when I heard that...

This so called rule that a captain should be the last man off the ship was probably written by rich old white men and many of them probably owned slaves. It is obsolete now and needs revamped, our new morality doesn't allow for such chivalry and the new rule when a ship is sinking should be every man for himself, women and children too. We can't live by laws written 200 years ago "dude".

It is a mariner tradition. Sinking of large cruise ships is very rare but there are many cases of fishing boats that have sunk where the captain died saving the crew.
    Mariners are a different breed.

I was trying to equate this too idiots that say the constitution is irrelevant nowadays, my attempt obviously failed.

It's really not a rule; it's a tradition. There were 1,000 crew members on the ship; 3,000 passengers. One would think that any cruise ship would have policies and procedures for onboard emergencies. The two cruises I was on had rehearsals for any call to abandon ship. (I wonder if that order was ever given? Guess we'll find out.) Admittedly, they all assumed you'd be in your cabin when you heard the alarm. But we had a meet-up place in a corridor depending upon where our cabin was...and a crew member assigned to meet us there and give us further instructions. We were escorted to "our life boat."

In any emergency, there has to be someone in charge of the someones that are tasked with aiding passengers. This ship was sorely lacking in that department. It's as much the fault of the cruise line itself as it is the captain, though no one can doubt this man was a coward.

And let's not forget that the captain was telling "the ground" that they had an electrical problem for the first thirty minutes after a 100-foot hole was opened in the ship. This guy was either drunk or luny.
The devil whispered in my ear, "You cannot withstand the storm." I whispered back, "I am the storm."

He's the Captain of the ship. It is his job to be in charge during smooth sailing and emergencies. All emergencies, not just those where eventually the ship and everyone will get back to a port in one piece. He is getting paid to be in charge til everyone else is off the ship to the very best of his ability. He did not do what he was being paid to do in this case. Whether you want to chock it up to cowardice, pure incompetence, or both, he is still guilty of not doing his job. In this case, people died because of it. And, although some may have died regardless, it is highly likely that if he would have stayed onboard the ship and actually coordinated the evacuation, like he should have done, at least some, if not all, of those people would very likely not now be dead or missing.

They do. They're required to have an evacuation plan and conduct lifeboat/abandon ship drills on a monthly basis. They're also required to conduct a muster drill with passengers 24 hours from the time of embarkation.

This incident is anomaly and a sure fire demonstration of what an utter lack of leadership will result in. In the last decade or so, there have been several large passenger vessel's that have sank. Some in some pretty dangerous waters (Antarctica/Alaska). The vast majority of these sinkings, the captains responded appropriately with a minimal loss of life.
