Mo. Gov. Candidate Omits Full College Degree Name

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence touts on his website that he “earned a degree in Economics” from the University of Missouri-Columbia. What his website doesn’t say is that the degree was in home economics.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in an online story Tuesday that the university says Spence majored in family economics and management also called consumer economics and received a bachelor’s of science degree in home economics in 1981.
I don't see what the problem is. With a degree in home economics, he can probably "cook the books" better than most other politicians.

    Article is here.

Isn't that the same subject matter that Forest Gump got his degree in, too.

Any more, I'd put more faith in a politician with a degree in "home economics" than one with a degree in "economics". Home ec majors understand the consequences of debt.

Apparently he took his minimalistic education skilz and took a small local company into a multi-billion dollar company with factories in 3 different states. For a state with an 8.2% unemployment rate and a 600 million dollar annual deficit, maybe they could use a home ec major with good business sense.

Yes. Owning houses, cars, etc. Anyone who doesn't take advantage of a steady income via financing is a fool!

    Also sometimes bankruptcy, though.

Sounds like echoes of Maggie Thatcher's simplistic "kitchen sink economics" from the nineteen eighties.

As is anyone who allows his outstanding debts to approach several multiples of his yearly steady income.

He must have been on a football scholarship.

Comparing a household to a government makes absolutely no sense.
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

In 1980, the average home cost $52,000 in Illinois. Assuming a 25% down payment and an effective annual interest rate of 8% compounded monthly (a high estimate), not factoring for escrow and various taxes, the total monthly payment would be approximately $289 per month, for 360 months.

    39000/((1-(1/(1+8%/12))^360)/(8%/12))

Moral of the story: the overwhelming majority of debt is fixed.
