ST. LOUIS (AP) – Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence touts on his website that he “earned a degree in Economics” from the University of Missouri-Columbia. What his website doesn’t say is that the degree was in home economics.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in an online story Tuesday that the university says Spence majored in family economics and management also called consumer economics and received a bachelor’s of science degree in home economics in 1981.

I don't see what the problem is. With a degree in home economics, he can probably "cook the books" better than most other politicians.

Any more, I'd put more faith in a politician with a degree in "home economics" than one with a degree in "economics". Home ec majors understand the consequences of debt.

Apparently he took his minimalistic education skilz and took a small local company into a multi-billion dollar company with factories in 3 different states. For a state with an 8.2% unemployment rate and a 600 million dollar annual deficit, maybe they could use a home ec major with good business sense.

Yes. Owning houses, cars, etc. Anyone who doesn't take advantage of a steady income via financing is a fool!

Also sometimes bankruptcy, though.

Sounds like echoes of Maggie Thatcher's simplistic "kitchen sink economics" from the nineteen eighties.

As is anyone who allows his outstanding debts to approach several multiples of his yearly steady income.

Comparing a household to a government makes absolutely no sense.

In 1980, the average home cost $52,000 in Illinois. Assuming a 25% down payment and an effective annual interest rate of 8% compounded monthly (a high estimate), not factoring for escrow and various taxes, the total monthly payment would be approximately $289 per month, for 360 months.

39000/((1-(1/(1+8%/12))^360)/(8%/12))

Moral of the story: the overwhelming majority of debt is fixed.

Ya know that means the next person that comes along has to cover that. So now a 52k home is worth what?

What an idiot. If he'd have called it Consumer Economics, it'd be a nonissue. 'Course I do agree with you -- he'll fit right in.

The median home value in Illinois (2010) was between $145,000 and $150,000.

Kinda makes it hard for people when wages haven't increased in the same proportion.

GDP per capita in 1980's dollars in 1980 was about $12,250 ;)

And now it was what about 24k whereas housing has outpaced that rate?

$45,348 (in 2009 dollars) in 2009. Keep in mind that we are using nominal numbers because debt is fixed. I did not convert the median home value in Illinois in 2010 to 1980 dollars.

Damn you sharp on this stuff. :)

I like how he said he couldn't get into business school and pass courses to graduate on time so instead he majored in home economics.... How hard is it to fail business school? Also, what kind of job can you get with a degree in home economics?

I dunno know. I guess one could become a Food Channel star...?

Or go back and try to obtain their teaching degree to become a home ec teacher?

Apparently CEO of a multi-billion dollar plastics corporation...

I just am TOTALLY loving all the snarky, smarmy "hah...home-ec...he so STOOPID" comments about a guy who turned a small company into a multibillion dollar business with factories in three states, all made by...well...lets just be generous and say people with LESSER credentials...
