Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope

    From Reuters.com:
"This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," he said.

"The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue," Benedict told the diplomats.

In other words, Pope Benedict is desperate because same-sex relationships and families are becoming more accepted. Such acceptance is based on people becoming more familiar with gay individuals through personal experience, the media and studies that disprove myths about them. Because those myths are easily disproved with tangible evidence, Benedict has realized that he must try to scare people into agreeing with him by appealing to more vague and subjective concepts like "dignity" and "promotion of family" and "social cohesion".

Frankly, Benedict is moving the church backwards as this ridiculousness undermines its increased embracing of scientific inquiry in modern history by basing arguments about measurable realities, like the effect of same-sex parenting on children, on nonsense rather than research. By making these comments, he's likely just going to alienate more Catholics, thereby continuing to make the Church its own worst enemy. One would think that after its child sex abuse scandal, it would take a dose of humility. Guess not.

In the end he will just have to live with a changing world. He can live with 2000 year old ideas.

The Catholic Church is a shadow of its former self in the United States. And the Pope and his proclamations are rapidly becoming irrelevant. I personally am appalled at the church's continual cover-up of those sexual abuse scandals. More than that, by its exclusionary religious practices, the idea that one can buy (with $$) their way out of mortal sin through Special Dispensation, that if one dies in mortal sin they go to hell, and that babies who die without being baptised are kept segregated in limbo. I could go on. Thank God they can eat meat on Fridays now or hell would be full.

What exactly did you expect someone like to the Pope (of all people) to say? Is this really any surprise? There's nothing in your article to debate, and so your thread is doomed to become another $2 whore everyone will ejaculate their emotions on.

Don't blame anyone but yourself when this thread get's closed and/or flushed.

Actually, the Catholic Church has been well off since the 20th century, and maintains its status. Yes, the scandals have rocked portions of the congregation, but for the most part, being Catholic is being Catholic. Indeed, the American congregation is largely split up and does not follow the Pope's words like a silly Protestant would think (which was why American Catholics had appeared largely Protestantized by many of the Catholic faith since the 19th century), yet I think its recent problems are not *as* large as one may think. We do not sell indulgences all that much, because we haven't had much of a playboy since Giovanni Medici.

This from the man who dresses like this....

In the Gay President thread we discussed whether people would accept investing political power in someone who dresses flamboyantly. Sheesh!

How does gay marriage undermine families again? It won't stop straight people from procreating, and it'll provide homes for otherwise unwanted kids if gays choose to adopt.
