White House Chief of Staff William Daley will quit his post this afternoon less than a year after taking the job, sources said, shaking up the White House management as President Obama gears up for his reelection.
Daley, 63, will be replaced by Budget Director Jacob Lew, the sources added. The president is expected to address the changes in a public statement at 3 p.m.

hmmmm...Is this more sign that the Obama WH sees the writing on the wall?

I'm no fan of Obama but the comings and goings are pretty common. He's probably been offered a plum position with Goldman Sachs.

Heh, heh, I like the dig about GS, but really? Anything else we tear down to the smallest semantic of a word, gesture, thought. Now, we should all just say 'eh, no big deal' when the Presidents CoS quits right at the start of the campaign?

Smell test? = something fishy.

Daley had already been demoted a while back; he retained the title of Chief of Staff but not much of the actual substance. I suspect no one really wants to stay under those circumstances.

Daley expressed his desire to return to Chicago, which is the same thing Emanuel did.

They just miss the pizza.

Oh. So why the demotion? Not the disingenuous, hack that Rham was?

No. It's a clear sign that Daley's wife refused to move to Washington, DC away from her children and grandchildren. I respect him for that, actually.

Surely you meant to say 'pizza the action' ?

he has previously stated that he intended to leave after Obama's first term
would be curious to know what actually caused him to depart early
was this his choice ... and, if so, why not stick around til '13 as previously indicated, or was he dumped

what makes this much more curious is the lack of discussion about it on msnbc. all those insiders and no one with any thoughts about such a major change

Daley Stepping Down in Rare White House Shake-Up - NYTimes.com

President Obama's first chief of staff Rahm Emanuel once sat on the board of troubled federal mortgage giant Freddie Mac. Bill Daley, the president's chief of staff whose departure was announced today, was previously a top executive at financial firm J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. So of course there should be little surprise that Obama's latest chief of staff, announced today by the president himself, also has deep ties to the financial industry himself.

I smell a good book on the horizon.

the good book I am eager to read is the one in which Rahm Emanuel explains why he was not allowed to do his job in the White House.

Not even the same thing. Many administrations have gone through changes of staff after re election to their 2nd terms. However, not so usual for an administration to have their CoS quit at the beginning of the race, just as the post from you indicated just one post earlier.

Daily has gone through, or seen something he feels he needs to distance himself from....

Pizza? Why would you return to Chicago for pizza? There is a reason that Chicago is called the Second City (says the native New Yorker).

Thin curst over thick. Amen brother. :peace

Emanuel and Daly had the same job but perhaps their reasons for leaving were very very different. In time, we will find out more. IO am less interested in the details of why daly left and in getting the ins and outs of the Emanul situation. When Obama hired him I was overjoyed and thought it was the absolute right man for the job. It sent a signal to the right that he had a pit bull in charge and he was not going to take any crap from anybody. And then Emanuel was not allowed to be himself and do his job.

I want to know why.

chicago doughy pizza, no thanks
nyc pizza, meh
best pizza i have ever tasted was out of philly
cheese steaks, so so, but the philly pizza (and stromboli)
was superb

if daley returned for the pizza, then no loss
if he returned because he could not get along with the white house inner circle, then was it him or the inner circle

Obama would be wise to cut geitner free and appoint Erskine Bowles to replace him
that is the personnel move which would inspire confidence on main street as well as wall street
