BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Police shot and killed an armed eighth-grader who "engaged" officers in the main hallway of his middle school on Wednesday, the South Texas school district said.Brownsville school district officials said administrators immediately called police after the student brandished a weapon about 8 a.m., shortly after classes started at Cummings Middle School. When police arrived, the student "engaged" the officers and was shot, district spokeswoman Drue Brown said in an emailed statement.

As bad as I feel for the family of the boy, I feel tenfold for the cops. This will mess them up I would think.

I agree. And, since this happened in Texas, I would doubt we'll see all the bleeding hearts claiming the police over-reacted, yada yada yada. You "brandish" a gun in a school and don't fall flat on your face when coppers arrive, you're probably gunna' be dead. Horrible tragedy averted.

The one thing I would like to know further is how the student "engaged" the cops. The article even says they don't know if the student fired any shots or even how the student engaged the police.

Not pointing one way or the other, just will wait until further information comes along. I will give the benefit of the doubt to the officers at this point though.

I suspect there may be witnesses. But who knows?

Wow - all I feel is sad. I have no strong opinion. Just sad.

Sad a child can get ahold of a weapon so easily.
Sad no one knew he had it.
Sad he took it to school - sad he did anything.
Sad no one stopped it before it ended in a tragic death.
Sad that everyone was so terrified - no doubt imagining Columbine and other tragedies while they waited without knowing
Sad that they didn't just shoot to disarm or maim - but to kill.
Sad that this type of situation is becoming more common place and the killing of armed children is actually occurring more frequent in our world.

We're there warning signs - notions - thoughts - threats? Anything before this happened?

Right you are...an 8 year old is shot dead. 3 cheers for Texas, the most gun happy State in the Union. Can you imagine if that boy had lived...the horror.
THe NRA should give that kids Dad a medal for teaching his youngsters about guns at an early age.

He's an eighth grader. Read next time. It helps.

I suspect we will find out more later. They need time to gather testimony from anyone involved and witnesses (if any).

Ok, an 12 year old boy is shot dead and everyone in Texas cheers. Happy now?
Most 8th graders are 13 or 14 yo.

Sad they shot the child dead, but it may have been the only way to assure the safety of others. Aunt Spiker said what I feel in post #5

That shooting to maim or disarm is strictly the stuff of movies. Once the police have to engage deadly force, they need to be prepared to kill.

Nope. The student is likely a 13-14 year old. Still not happy.

Furthermore, your point is ridiculous. Kids at that age have enough choice in their brains to make those decisions. Go ahead and criticize gun culture, and excuse the actions of a disturbed young man.

Yes. Unfortunately, the idea that a kid shouldn't have such easy access to a gun in the first place probably won't catch on in Texas either.

Too bad you don't know WTF you're talking about. Texas doesn't even rank in the top 10 as far as gun ownership goes. They actually fall in the middle of the road. Guess someone's ignorant preconceived notion has spurred some diarrhea of the fingers.

This wasn't an "8 year old". This was an 8th grader. 8th Graders are around 12 or 13.

He didn't say gun ownership, he said "gun happy."

...and RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) should give your teachers a kick in the balls.

This kid might be a product of the fatherless welfare class. But...we don't really know. Do we?

Good god you guys - who knows! Maybe he found it and thought it was cool, maybe he was being bullied and thought he was going to defend himself . . . we have no clue and I think it serve no purpose right now to assume we know anything.

He didn't say gun ownership, he said "gun happy."

Wouldn't ownership be the primary indicator of "gun happiness?" Regardless, still a stupid comment based on an ignorant preconceived notion of Texas.

It's unfortunate. This is why you don't do stupid things. You get hurt.

12, 12, 14, isn't exactly a child. Someone of that age is old enough to understand what the likely consequences are of getting into confrontation with armed police officers, while brandishing a deadly weapon. It's tragic, but there is no one to blame but the idiot who has at least done a great service to Mankind by having himself removed from the gene pool before he had a chance to procreate.

My wife, by the way, has owned a gun since she was eight years old. At that age, she knew better than to get herself into this sort of situation.

Actually the poster was correct. The lenient nature of the gun laws in Texas is absurd. And that isn't preconceived.
