As bad as I feel for the family of the boy, I feel tenfold for the cops. This will mess them up I would think.

I agree. And, since this happened in Texas, I would doubt we'll see all the bleeding hearts claiming the police over-reacted, yada yada yada. You "brandish" a gun in a school and don't fall flat on your face when coppers arrive, you're probably gunna' be dead. Horrible tragedy averted.

The one thing I would like to know further is how the student "engaged" the cops. The article even says they don't know if the student fired any shots or even how the student engaged the police.

Not pointing one way or the other, just will wait until further information comes along. I will give the benefit of the doubt to the officers at this point though.

I suspect there may be witnesses. But who knows?

Wow - all I feel is sad. I have no strong opinion. Just sad.

Sad a child can get ahold of a weapon so easily.
Sad no one knew he had it.
Sad he took it to school - sad he did anything.
Sad no one stopped it before it ended in a tragic death.
Sad that everyone was so terrified - no doubt imagining Columbine and other tragedies while they waited without knowing
Sad that they didn't just shoot to disarm or maim - but to kill.
Sad that this type of situation is becoming more common place and the killing of armed children is actually occurring more frequent in our world.

We're there warning signs - notions - thoughts - threats? Anything before this happened?

A screaming comes across the sky.
It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.

Right you are...an 8 year old is shot dead. 3 cheers for Texas, the most gun happy State in the Union. Can you imagine if that boy had lived...the horror.
THe NRA should give that kids Dad a medal for teaching his youngsters about guns at an early age.

I suspect we will find out more later. They need time to gather testimony from anyone involved and witnesses (if any).

Most 8th graders are 13 or 14 yo.

Sad they shot the child dead, but it may have been the only way to assure the safety of others. Aunt Spiker said what I feel in post #5
