The president of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has a tumor in the thyroid gland and will be operated on the 4th of January, said spokesman, Alfredo Soccimarro, on Tuesday (27th).
The disease of the head of state, 58, was detected during a routine medical checkup, Soccimarro told reporters.
Cristina Kirchner had a routine examination on December 22 that revealed a "papillary carcinoma in the right lobe of the thyroid gland," said the spokesman.
Scoccimarro went on to say that the president "has already had pre-surgical tests that indicated the lack of involvement of the lymph nodes and of metastases."
"Having now completed the corresponding pre-surgical examinations, surgery has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 4, at the Southern Hospital with a probable time of 72 hours of hospitalization and a convalescence of 20 days," added the spokesman.
The vice-president of Argentina, Amado Boudou, will assume the direction of the country between the 4th and 24th of January, Scoccimarro continued.
Cristina Kirchner resumed power on last December 10 for another four year term after winning the elections of October 23, with 54.11% of the vote.
