The military is not just a bunch of killers. Discipline and order is central to it, teamwork is also central to it. Yes they have to use lethal force at times. The proper application of force is important to.

These 8 should be dishonorably discharged and do brig time, if even a fraction of what they're charged with... bullying, physical beatings, racial slurs, etc. ... is true. And so should the officers in charge of these men. If they knew and didn't stop it, they're guilty. If they had no clue that 8 of their men were abusing a member of their platoon to the point where he (apparently) killed himself to get away from the abuse, then they're guilty of extreme dereliction of duty causing the death of a soldier under their command.

I'm sick of officers skating and throwing underlings beneath the bus. They knew. If they didn't, they don't belong in the military because they are clearly not officer material.

The military I was in trained us to kill in order to survive. Yes, discipline is important but it does not always override youth and prejudice as well as the fact we don't know what the deceased might have done in the past to those troops. Beyond that...way beyond that, suicide is a mental disorder. Nothing is bad enough to make you take your own life. The old "sticks and stones" thing we learned s children comes to mind.

Were these 8 soldiers acting in an official manner, as was the ATF when they launched Fast and Furious?

Was the Fast and Furious operation launched by several rogue agents and now that it's been exposed, the administration is going to come down like a hammer on any wrong doing, or violations of the law?

Did the platoon leader in this case lie to Congress about what his troops were doing?

Are you starting to see the difference, here?

Can you possibly see the difference between the President of The United States and a 20-something-year-old platoon leader?

They should get the death penalty...if they are guilty.

To really view this tragedy in context and draw conclusions about "should we test better?", I think we need to know what the overall murder rate in our armed services is in relation to the general population of the USA. These people are human just like the rest of us. I'd venture to guess the murder rate is lower...don't know. But without that information, it's pretty hard to draw a logical conclusion.
