The U.S. government is sounding the alarm after reports that Dutch scientists have created a highly-contagious and deadly airborne strain of bird flu that is potentially capable of killing millions, The Independent reported Tuesday.
The U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity is currently analyzing how much of the scientists' information should be allowed to be published—given the inherent risks of having the information fall into the hands of terrorists or rogue states.
"The fear is that if you create something this deadly and it goes into a global pandemic, the mortality and cost to the world could be massive," a senior US government adviser told The Independent.
Scientists, too, are questioning whether the science should ever have been performed in the first place.
"There are people who say that the work should never have been done, or if it was done it should have been done in a setting where the information could be better controlled," a source close to the US biosecurity board told the newspaper.

Science will continue to claim that it is not responsible for its discoveries since it is only pursuing knowledge, but some scientists will continue to push the envelope. There is something to be said for human advancement in that we must learn to live with our most dangerous knowledge, but I do think this research is irresponsible.

The only validity behind publishing this would be discussing the techniques they used to mutate the viral DNA and create the virus. There would be scientific validity and value regarding the publishing of these techniques due to viral therapies (using viruses to treat diseases such as cancer) being something that several scientists are looking into. Although this is assuming that they engineered a new protocol for such procedures. I don't understand why they would have to preform their experiments in order to create a more dangerous version of the bird flu though or the exact mutations and details behind creating it.

It's not an excuse, the aim of the paper was to study the mutation mechanism so as to develop a way to stop it. It's hard to develop flu vaccines because the virus mutate so quickly, staying one step ahead could be helpful. On the other hand, there is an arguement to be made that having created the virus, there could be a leak from the laboratory that stores it like the foot and mouth virus a while back - if this one escape, we are screwed.
