Damn, I had Castro in my dictator death pool.

Likely his son.

Which is probably good news. Kid seems to be an idiot.

Uhg. NK imploding is going to be damned ugly/messy/bad. Glad he's dead, the planet, is better off.

I wonder if we'll get another crazy ass funeral like when his dad died.

The North Korean news announcer stated Kim Jong Il died two days ago, although most other reports are saying the 18th. Im assuming this is Korean time which means today in 19Dec for those of you in the West, and I know its extremely early to tell but this may be a good sign. When Kim Il sung died, the father, the official media also waited roughly the same amount of time. I assume the wait is to give Party and Government elites time to deal with a few critical and immediate issues, during that first death of the leader in North Korea Kim Jong Il was already well prepared within the government to assume power there was no question and the transition was fairly smooth as far as anyone can tell. Since this death is so far, again extremely early to tell, is following the same pattern it may be a sign that the NK government has prepared for this and mechanisms were in place to ensure another smooth transition to avoid anything that would threaten the state or stability. This would also follow in line with a natural pastern of thinking NK elites would follow after Kin Jong Il's stroke in 2008, a natural response for them after that event would be to prepare and put those mechanisms in place while they still had time to do it.

Call me extremely cautiously optimistic of a smooth transition.

And expect more of the same, but not quite as much and not quite as genuine.

Wow, I wonder if it was Team America that got him.

Here's hoping that someone saner will lead that country now.

Good point...Castro with cancer, now Chavez with cancer and Il...well...ill no more. Coincidence?

I doubt it will make much difference that Jong-Il is dead, but one can hope.

The South Koreans appear somewhat concerned, military on emergency standby, national security council meeting etc.

This thread is much more in the spirit of things than the other. Good to know.

I would be too, never know what crazy **** they might do in a time of uncertainty.

Good riddance to human garbage.Unfortunately one of his sons will take over and it will be the same old **** over again.

Good riddance I say, but it's going to be interesting next few weeks. I wonder how long he's been dead though, if they kept this under wraps, and he's been on ice for a while, or if this truly happened today.

North Korea Says Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il Has Died - ABC News

Good thing he's dead, but does anyone else find it strange that the article has only one line? They could at least explain when and how the announcement was made, and what the neighboring countries are doing.

They have every right to be concerned, I'm concerned myself, but l'm cautiously optimistic this will resolve itself without serious incident. However unlike myself the ROK government can't afford optimism and I'm sure there are meetings going on and orders being sent out right now, to decide what to do and just in case it goes south.

Regardless of how good this news is, I refuse to speak "il" of the dead...

I wasn't a fan of the man, but he was intelligent and he extremely skilled in the regional politics of Asia. That's no mean feat.

Very little is known about his son, but one thing is certain -- he won't be nearly as seasoned as his father, which could mean increased unpredictability in North Korea.

Increased unpredictability in a nation where so many are living on the edge of starvation on the one hand and where there is a nuclear weapon on the other is not a good thing.

We shouldn't be rejoicing over the death of Kim Jong Il. We should be hoping and praying (or whatever it is each of us does) that this doesn't destabilize North Korea further.
