I'm dying to know who gets those rockin' shades.
Chances Kim's son will say "No more dictatorship, time for freedom!"? XD
I'm dying to know who gets those rockin' shades.
I doubt he would give up communism but maybe he would see people literally starving to death and do something about it. But meh, I'm just thinking optimistically. I doubt that will happen.
All the Villians are dead - Saddam, Osama, Gadaffi, and Kim. The world is a safer place now.
There's 3 scenarios:
1) Internal chaos. There are many competing factions and character in the upper levels of North Korea. Late Kim-Jong-Il's brother-in-law's faction was the leading one. If there is internal chaos and disorder, the South Korean military has about a 100% chance of intervening, as it will be a time of division and weakness, and as NK's huge military can be a risk under unreliable circumstances.
2) His third son, Kim-Jong-Uen is the most likely successor, as his other two sons are all incompetent and stupid. If the third son is smart (which I suspect he is, yet inexperienced), he will rule North Korea with only minor opposition. He'll probably rule like his father
3) The same scenario as above, yet with a little twist: He will rule like Gorbachev, recognizing the failure of the state, and introducing reforms one at a time. It's highly unlikely though
Remember, Kim-Jong-Il had a long time to prepare to succeed his father. His son didn't have much time and experience to prepare for it. He is speculated to have organized and masterminded the Yeongpyong island attacks, like his father did in masterminding the bombing of the Korean Air plane, but the circumstances and the situation is very different from when his father took over. We should all be ready for some rumbles and the unpredicted
I think the world is generally better off without him. Kim Jong Il was pretty much the only person crazy enough to start a nuclear war, and now he's not around to do that. Hopefully his successor (probably his third son) will be spared the astounding ego which led KJI to believe he was a god. A little humility might do the country some good.
I was hoping you would be around to give us your perspective. Are South Korean forces on alert?

I wasn't a fan of the man, but he was intelligent and he extremely skilled in the regional politics of Asia. That's no mean feat.
He's finally dead...
He was internationally hated. Every country in Asia hated him. Nobody traded much with him at all. He spent all his country's cash on cronies and the military (and even they're starving). His only life-line/umbilical cord was China, and they didn't really like him. They let his people starve by the millions in horrible famine. It's not like he had any friends or any real support. He refused to let outside information into his country. The entire place remains literally and figuratively in 'in the dark'. He was completely isolated and the entire world sighs in relief at his passing. That's skilled in the politics of Asia?
Well the truth is somewhere between yours and TEDS statements, because the fact his regime has been able to survive despite everything you listed is a testament to the relative effectiveness of his Iron fisted leadership.
That's nonsense. The ability to brutally oppress a population does not equate to "skilled in Asian politics". He was despised by all and has nearly destroyed his people. The only reason he was able to do this is because no one much gave a crap and he built nukes under Clinton's desk.
Secondly that's not exactly what I meant. North Korea has managed to keep itself relevant and keep China on side somehow, even if its tenious.
I don't agree with TED's statement 100% but it takes something to keep your regime in tact when everyone around you hates you.
Likely his son.
Which is probably good news. Kid seems to be an idiot.
And that is NOT skilled politics. That is being a good brutal dictator. And no one really cared to stop him. The only reason he was ever relevent was because he attacked South Korea, starved his people to terrible famine and developed nukes. That being his only relevence (and kidnapping actresses), I don't see the "skill in Asian politics" AT ALL.
This is like saying "being a brutal dictator" is "skilled in Asian politics". You want skilled in Asian politics? Look at the (free) Asian Tigers - they're living in the first world, that's getting the job done.
I got news for you dude, he's not the only brutal dictator in Asia; they are not "skilled in Asian politics" either, and their countries are, for the most part, also pieces of garbage.
