Writer Christopher Hitchens Dies : NPR

The influential writer and cultural critic Christopher Hitchens died on Thursday at the age of 62 from complications of cancer of the esophagus. Hitchens confronted his disease in part by writing, bringing the same unsparing insight to his mortality that he had directed at so many other subjects.

Damnit, this is terrible. I loved his appearance on the talking heads shows; he was always so abrasive and interesting to watch. I can't believe I haven't heard more about this before it happened. Very surprising and sad. :( RIP

He had been losing his ability to write (physically, not mentally). He wrote about this in his last Vanity Fair article.

In reading his description of it, and the mental anguish it caused him, I caught myself audibly gasping. As a writer, I understand. I have lost my physical ability to write before, but luckily I was assured of getting it back eventually. Hitchens had no such assurance to look forward to. It is truly the most horrible sort of deprivation, if it's what you're driven to do and such a large part of how you define yourself as a person.

That in mind, I hope he's at peace now, and I'm glad he died before that time came.

I wonder if he goes to heaven.

Don't look at me like that, some one was going to say it...

I've been waiting for this. Sad end to a great talent. I admire him as much for his literary criticism as for his political and world affairs writing. I would loved to have known him.

He will if his brother's prayers are answered. Still he'll complain at the absence of liquor and ashtrays.

This hurts. Hitchens was superb author, columnist, debater, and speaker. He was the first author I read when I embraced atheism.

Any bets on a "deathbed confession?" (Despite the fact he clearly wrote that this was not the case)

You mean deathbed conversion? No. Not a chance.

Is it weird that I thought he was going to die today? When I saw the thread title, I was a bit taken aback. Oh well.

In any case, I'm sorry for his wife and children, especially his children, but he's of no particularly significance to me.

Entertained, educated, irritated and disappointed people of most political persuasions at some point in his life. Social discourse is less without him, since he would challenge at least one of your dearly held views and do so well.

I disagreed as much as I agreed with him or more...but I always respected the depth of his intelligence...RIP

Christopher Hitchens Dies dec 15 at age 62

Christopher Hitchens dies from cancer at age 62.

Christopher was one of the bravest and most original voices in the media today. I didn't agree with everything he said, but I respected him for his obvious intelligence, fearlessness in his beliefs and his love of humanity and debate. RIP, Hitch, we miss you.

Bleh. I didn't like the man very much, disagreed too much with him, but as with most deaths, his death is regretable

Don't really agree with much of what Hitchens ever said, but eh, we all die at some point....RIP.

I can't help but think that as an athiest, the moments close to death are lonely and scary. He knows now whether he was right or wrong... I just hope that he's a peace.

He would only know if he were wrong.

Great author, great debater, one of the most interesting men I've ever had a chance to read or listen to. I'm sure he will be missed.

Horrible news...

Sorry to hear when anyone dies, but isn't that a girlie magazine or something? Never read it personally.
