(CNN) -- Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, has engaged in systemic discrimination against Latinos with practices that violate federal law and the Constitution, the U.S. Justice Department announced Thursday.

A comprehensive investigation found the practices include "unlawful stops, detentions and arrests of Latinos," according to a Justice Department statement.

It also noted that the sheriff's office has discriminated against "Latino inmates with limited English by punishing them and denying critical services."

It further blames the office for allowing "specialized units to engage in unconstitutional practices" and for a lack of oversight and deputy training.

Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez said the office's "systematic disregard for basic constitutional protections has created a wall of distrust between the sheriff's office and large segments of the community."

On the one hand, even the police shouldn't be immune to oversight.

On the other hand, given that the National Defense Authorization Act is probably going to become law, the Feds have a LOT of balls, bitching about someone else unlawfully detaining people.
 
Yet another report of unethical and illegal behavior at the Maricopa Sheriff's office. And yet people still continue to support Arpaio Its ridiculous that all he to do is spout some playground tough-talking BS and he gets a free pass for his unacceptable actions.
 
It should be interesting to see what comes of this. God knows Arpaio will use this to strengthen his 'there all against me' rallying cry, but I'm curious as to how the DOJ will follow up with this.
 
I suppose it's just a coincidence that that "large segment of the community" that illegal aliens belong to? Criminal profiling is not racial discrimination.

This is only a small part of what Arpaio has been involved in over the last several years. He is a bombastic dickwit who has cost the county bazillions in legal fees for never ending and often credible suits file against him and the department.

When a cop arrests a criminal they stack the charges, they know that some of the charges won't stick. If they have a particularly slippery bastard they will find every possible way to mount charges. THAT is what you are seeing now with Arpaio. The feds have been investigating him for sometime. Arpaio has been involved in a huge power dispute with members of city government. He went so far as to arrest some, to investigate others, to have patrol cars sit outside the homes of some ALL in an attempt to use his power to intimidate his political enemies. The federal government subpoenaed Arpaio to hand over files during an investigation, Arpaio refused. He has refused to provide some local governments in the county with crime statistics for political reasons. Just recently it was discovered that Arpaio has neglected to investigate over 400 cases of sexual assaults in the NW part of the county! Now suddenly, and sadly too late for many women and children, Arpaio has his office working on those cases - after a big story in the paper exposing Arpaio's neglect.

This investigation reeks of politics. Interested to see the specifics of the "findings." Particularly after the rather glowing results of the investigation conduced by Immigration and Customs Enforcement towards the end of 08. Sadly, the DOJ has become overtly politicized under this administration. Its clear that this is an attempt to pain the MCSO as some rogue law enforcement agency when considering the mandated relationship with ICE/USBP, would be next to impossible.

"The OI and DRO supervisors consider the conduct and performance of the MCSO ... officers to be professional and meeting the requirement of the MOA." Translated, that means officials from the Homeland Security Department's Office of Investigation (OI), along with officials from the Detention and Removal Operations office (DRO), concluded that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), in its handling of illegal immigrants, acted in a professional manner and complied with a memorandum of agreement (MOA) under which the government gave them the authority to enforce federal law. That agreement included a ban on racial profiling.

ICE investigators also interviewed top federal officials involved in illegal immigrant cases in Arizona. They found an "excellent" working relationship between the sheriff's office and the feds. ICE talked as well to federal prosecutors in Phoenix, who described the cases brought by Maricopa County as "high quality."

All the other crap he's done. He was only elected by a 5% margin. I suspect he'd get less than that now. He's being investigated by the FBI among others for a number of reasons.

Yet another biased report,and baseless attack against a sheriff who is only enforcing the law. This only shows the desperation of pro-illegals and scumbag sympathizers who only want to see the man removed from office.

The more and more you pro-illegals and scumbag sympathizers try to demonize Sheriff Joe Arpaio the bigger the spotlight you put on the man and the more you make him a hero. Because most Americans are sick and ****ing tired of inmates being treated with kid gloves and given all sorts of luxuries and illegal immigrants being ignored. Before you people brought him to national attention with your failed miserable attempt to demonize him most Americas had no idea you could still put inmates in chain gangs, make them live in tent cities, eat only bologna sandwiches and drink only water, have no AC or central heat, make inmates wear pink underwear and enforce laws against illegal immigration. Some of you people claim Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a publicity whore,you have yourselves to blame for that.

Arpaio is a cluster *** for criminals, and they are sorry after they serve in one of his chain gangs. What could be wrong about a criminal or illegal alien getting his just do?
 
Many of the illegals arrested during MCSO sweeps of businesses are arrested for ID theft. Guess DOJ doesn't care about id theft.
I will most likely be called a racist, but did anyone find it interesting that the DOJ giving the briefing was hispanic. Also on the phoenix news, the most prominate speakers at a news conference were all hispanic. Now don't tell me they are no playing politics. Not once did any one of them address the illegal issue. It was the "community".

My opinion that group is as much a racist they claim the Sheriff to be.

Oh, I thought they were called ethics. The last time I checked, racial profiling is unconstitutional and 49 other states have recognized that.

So what is the line between criminal profiling and racial profiling? Ever what film of people crossing the border. How would you describe them?
 
It's not Canadians jumping the fence into Arizona, it's Latinos and if the federal government can't police the country, it is up to other law enforcement officials to do the job. It's a shame the feds can't follow their own laws then turn around and listen to a bunch of whimpering babies. I say give the man a medal.
