New Haven Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote In Local Elections(edited)

Re: Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote

This mayor should be recalled and thrown out of office. Wonder if his bill included legal aliens? If not, why?

The right to vote is not a right because you live here, it is a right because you are a citizen. First local elections, next State, then Federal? What is becoming of our country?

Ummm...why? It has to pass through their local elected officials. If it does pass it would only be for local elections not federal elections. I thought you conservatives were all about deciding these type of things at the local level?

It opens the box up, legal wise.
Where did I say I was a conservative?
Even if it is a local issue, why would you support it?
They are "illegals". They should not be in the US to begin with.

I wouldn't support it. At the same time...saying the guy should be recalled and thrown out of office...what happens if the citizens of his city agree with him?

Then the mayor will be re-elected I guess.

Exactly...we have an issue with immigration enforcement....that is a federal issue that needs to be solved. Some states have decided to go the direction of enforcing their own laws (like Arizona and Georgia) and apparently some commutimes think that as long as your paying taxes in the community maybe you should have a voiece.

The citizens in the south agreed with secession, too. What's your opinion on that?

Who wants to to bet that this clown thinks that most of the illegals will vote for him? :rofl

Secession is a little different than allowing people to vote in local elections.

Oh, that's "different". :lamo

Shoulda seen that coming.

This city is down the street from where I live. The illegals would probably vote for the current mayor, so he has some motivation here.

Next week he is going to ask for all the people in North Korea to have the right to do write-in ballots.

Re: Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote

If I lived in that town I'd make it my life's mission to oust that mayor and anyone on the council who voted for such an unconstitution breach of citizen rights.

Re: Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote

Unbelievable. Why would anyone on any side of the political spectrum support such utter rubbish? I think we should advertise free drivers licenses and voting rights to anyone here illegally and then give a date and time when they have to show up. Then when they show up, say, "we lied" and arrest, prosecute, and deport every one of them.

1) Connecticut, as far as I know, isn't exactly a prime nexus of illegal immigration.

2) He has a point in that there are taxpayers who pay local taxes who do not have a say in how those local taxes are allocated.

3) Illegal immigration would be less of a problem if we could make it more affordable and less bureaucratic, which is the kind of reform we need to lower illegal immigration.

He needs a psychological exam and a rubber suit.

1. maybe, but it might become one.
2. yes, but they are still illegal in the country.
3. maybe. Here is the question, what makes you think the US wants/needs more immigrants (legal/illegal)? Does a country not have a right to establish who it wants to migrate based on economic needs and what our resources can sustain.? If I had an endless supply of money I would take the Feds to court over immigration policy and lack of illegal alien enforcement from an environmental basis. (I am not a tree hugger, but I do believe the land can only support so many people. Just look at parts of Africa)

Republicans sometimes argue that people who don't pay taxes shouldn't get to vote. And yet if you suggest that the inverse would also hold true, they get upset...

Here's one of the problems with CT politics.

That mayor is not going to get voted out because, likely, he run's uncontested. In Ansonia, voting is a farce. There is generally only one person in each position to vote for, lol.

Anyone holding an address within the city limits should be able to vote.

I have to disagree. That notion disregards the importance of citizenship. A citizen is a person who understands the ideals of the nation and agrees to work toward its good and not just for himself. JFK's famous quote "ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" embodies the idea of citizenship. Someone born here grows up learning our history and culture. Someone from another country who moves here and chooses to become a citizen must learn what we're about and take a test and jump through many hurdles to become an American.

Citizenship is not the same thing as residency. You're not a citizen simply because of your presence. You're a citizen out of a commitment to country. Someone who's moved here only for their own economic gain who doesn't believe in the country should not be allowed to vote. Yes, it's possible that some people may be here and believe in the country, but haven't acquired citizenship yet. I sympathize, but they need to go through the legal process and attain citizenship. Then they can vote.

Yes, that's a brilliant idea.

People there illegally, should be given political power. You base this view on what basis? What rationale?

When it comes to many important issues I am not one of those let the states decide conservatives. Illegal immigration should not be encouraged in any part of the US and the elected officials who try to encourage illegal immigration should be thrown into prison and banned for life from serving in a political office.

Re: Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote

So, you just think it's a good idea based on nothing more then a whim.

Uh, no, I base it on my politics. I don't think you know what the word "whim" means.
