New Haven Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote In Local Elections(edited)

Re: Mayor Wants Illegals To Vote

Here's a question, or maybe a couple of questions....

Some of you have posted with more than a little clarity about the issue of allowing felons to vote, once their time has been served. The argument was, if they pay taxes, they deserve a say. Someone living in New Haven is certainly paying some taxes. Maybe not income taxes, but they ARE paying sales taxes, and likely a few other "fees", which are just taxes with a different name. They're here, they're working, and they're paying taxes. The only problem seems to be that they are illegals. But what makes these people illegal? A lack of following a bureaucratic process? Are we really so petty? They are here, they are working, and they are paying SOME taxes. i say we make so they pay ALL the taxes the rest of us pay.

Make them legal. Everything else is really a non issue.

Yes I am that petty. A people of a nation have a right to manage and control immigration / who enters its country for any reason.
Guess you don't care who comes in and how.

It's more than taking care of red tape. They disrespected our laws by illegally sneaking in. We should not reward that. We should prosecute them for it. If that's the definition of petty then so be it.

I agree with that. I'm trying to be practical. How many miles of border do we have, honestly? We could no sooner keep all illegals out than we could rid NYC of rats. All I'm saying is, it used to be very very easy to become a US citizen. Now it takes forever and a day, and about one mount everest worth of paperwork. THAT'S why they are coming illegally. It was never a problem before, because it was easier to just migrate here legally.

Save a tree, and cut out some bureaucrats(save some taxes!), by making it easy to move here again. What is our reason for not wanting to let more people in? Population control? This argument from the same folks that tend towards anti abortion laws, lol. Immigrants are what made this country great. It's what made us a world power, today. Everything of worth in this country, other than natural resources, was built on the backs of immigrants to this great land.

And again, from a practical stand point, unless you have some sort of kung fu idea for how to keep immigrants out, and to get rid of the illegal ones already here, that DOESN'T bankrupt us all in the process, out with it. Otherwise....they are here, they are working, they are paying SOME taxes.

I say we make them pay FULL taxes, like the rest of us.

Having to pay income taxes, when before, you didn't, is a reward?

First of all, most illegal immigrants didn't illegally sneak in, they came here on visas, which expired. Their crime isn't sneaking in, it's overstaying their welcome. See my above post regarding what to do about that.

40-45% is not most.
