Obama at Fort Bragg to troops: 'Welcome home!'

What I want to know is, are the troops actually coming home in truthful and literal sense, or are they just moving across the border to a neighboring country? The wording of this article (and every other that I have seen) is carefully worded to give as positive a spin as possible, but doesn't actually come right out and say which.

Officially transferring the flag and leaving the country do not necessarily add up to coming home.

I thought his speech to the troops was pretty good. Normally I am not impressed, but this one was actually pretty good. His line about how we left the country made me proud that I served.

More PR crap... similar to Bush's victory speech on the aircraft carrier.

Troops that haven't be re-allocated to other fronts have been brought home to prepare for potential civil unrest. Their job is not over.

But... people are ignorant and will take Obama's word for it.

It seems that there will be at the very least fewer there. That is good. We are building a huge new and very expensive embassy of some sort there though so we aren't "leaving".

It is pretty rare to do back to back deployments. Will they deploy again? Depends on how much longer they serve. Will they get time in the US for training and recovery? Almost certainly. With Iraq being over, one of the benefits is hopefully a little longer between deployments, which should help retention.

I hope you will educate yourself on the truth about the "Mission Accomplished" banner, and not continue in ignorance over it.

only 4,000 will remain in Kuwait. the VAST majority of troops that were in Iraq 3 years ago, are now home.

    the war is over.

Who gives a ****? It was still a dumb war banner or no banner.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Of all the stuff in the post you quoted, you went for that aspect? The "prepare for civil unrest" part was my favorite nonsense.
