NTSB recommends full ban on use of cell phones while driving

I like to use my phone for its map app when driving sometimes. This ban would prevent me from doing this, but would not stop me from using an unwieldy paper map. This rule is likely overboard.

Get a dock, then its a navigation device. problem solved :kitty:

I believe the number is 3,000 killed or murdered on our highways annually from cell phone drivers. How many died in our wars last year? If it were 50,000 would anyone actually do something other than make laws that cannot be enforced? Who are drivers talking to at 5:00 AM when I see them on the phone while driving? I don't like being a sexist but aren't the huge majority of violators?

I don't see any reason to ban hands-free cell phone use. If you're going to do that, wouldn't the same logic lead you to ban drivers from talking to other passengers in the car?
Even hands free cell phone use causes the brain to be more engaged in talking than driving. regardless of what people say or think, our brain is not a quad core multiprocessor...it is a single core system. If you are talking on the phone you are either not paying attention to who you are talking to or to the road. When driving at 65-75 miles an hour in a ton of steel, a seconds distraction tends to be fatal. And you are correct...people should limit conversations and for that matter, music when they drive, although music can easily be peripheral as it doesnt require interaction.

Lots of things should be illegal when driving. Eating, applying make-up, looking up addresses, reading books, watching movies. Some of the stuff we see people doing...

No, it doesn't tend to be fatal as it happens countless numbers of times daily.

Many far more distracting than hands free phone use.

So much for Darwinism.

Russian Roulette only tends to be fatal one in 6 tries. "A study commissioned by a leading UK insurance company, Direct Line (2003), revealed that talking on any cell phone while driving is so mentally distracting that it is as dangerous as driving when slightly over the legal blood-alcohol limit." Quote intact, but they stressed that figures INCLUDES hands free use of cell phones. But hey...since it doesnt always cause accidents and fatalities, no worries.
Cell Phones and Mobile Phones -- The Danger for Drivers

Personally I think this is more nanny state runamuck. what will be next a ban on changing CD's or tunning the radio, or eating while driving, or putting on makeup while driving.

Obviously they've had a few over the limit.

You should really stop putting on your makeup while driving, regardless.

So basically I don't need to harm anyone, just have to be doing something I shouldn't because it COULD harm someone? Lol, prevention tactics are always the best. Liberty, it can be dangerous. Lets avoid it by controlling what people do! Brilliant!

Whats next? Banning me from singing along with the radio?! I, sometimes, use the cell phone while driving to keep me awake. I really shouldn't be driving when I am that tired but I often have to. Which is better, me on the phone paying attention to the road and the phone or falling asleep? Hands free is literally the same as talking to someone else in the car or listening to the radio or even just thinking about what all you have to do in the day. No one is ever just thinking about the road when they drive.

I think banning texting is going to lead to more trouble of targeting people using GPS and other things while stopped at a red light because a cop is typically not going to see you while you are driving texting because he should be watching the road too! I am very against people texting while driving but I do not think a ban is going to have any affect. This is ridiculous! Why does the government continue to create laws like these. Seat belts? Who does that hurt but yourself if you crash?! Ridiculous. I understand that texting while driving can hurt others but I think education would be better than a law.

So...no drinking and driving laws then?

Nope, too harsh. Cell phones are lifesavers. I can understand why hands-free cellphones should be mandatory in automobiles and texting should be illegal, but to disallow any cell phone calls is draconian and unrealistic. There are legitimate reasons why people need to be available while driving, including notifications of emergencies. People will fight this tooth-and-nail. I will fight this tooth-and-nail.
