Virginia Tech Shooting: Lockdown After Two Killed, Including a Police Officer

Why are there multiple copy cat killers targeting VT?

Virginia Tech University, the site of the country's worst massacre, is on lockdown after two people, including a police officer, were shot and killed on the campus. The school said the suspect is at large and students are being told, "Stay indoors. Secure in place."
An alert on the Virginia Tech school's website said: "There is an active campus alert in Blacksburg. Everyone should seek shelter or stay where you are. Blacksburg Transit service is suspended until the alert is lifted."
Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski said a campus police officer stopped a vehicle shortly after noon today in the school's Coliseum parking lot, near McComas Hall.
"During the traffic stop. the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting," Owczarski said in the statement.

That school should issue bullet proof vests at freshman orientation.

Getting killed at a traffic stop. Jeesh, that's a horrible way to go.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

If only the policeman had been armed.

    Oh, wait.

He who shoots first wins, armed or otherwise.

    Sad.

Well, in fairness being armed still gives you a pretty damn good advantage over not being armed.

And the other guy being unarmed is even better.

But I'm not anti-gun. I'm just disgusted with Virginia's lack of reasonable limits, not to mention its neglect of mental health care (relevant to the last Tech shooting).

And, of course, I'm mocking the standard rightwing response to shootings.

How about waiting before pulling the trigger on this incident

you don't know where the person got the gun, how he got the gun and whether "reasonable limits" (are capital laws against murder reasonable even though they didn't stop the shootings) failed to stop a murder

I know one thing for sure--if the teacher who died trying to save students at the last VT massacre had been armed, far less people would have died

At least this doesn't appear to be another massacre. When I first heard on the radio that there was a lockdown at VT and two dead, I assumed it was a copy cat school shooting. It doesn't appear that is the case.
