This woman's issues were entirely her own, and she took her kids down in a fit of (what I have to assume was) psychosis. This is a tragedy for the children, and for the people in that office who were part of the stand-off, and for the police who tried but failed to difuse the situation. For the mother, it is nothing more than bat-**** crazy behavior that might have been prevented had she followed through with the process as originally scheduled.
Yes - I read that, too. . . she applied - reapplied - never supplied all the necessary paperwork and failed to follow up promptly on her incomplete applicatoin process.

    Some blunt thoughts:

Mom couldn't afford food, but had a gun?

The little girl that passed away, for a family in dire straights, how did she have mobile access to facebook but not food?

Sounds more like a mentally unstable woman then a failure of the Food Stamp program to me.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

Guns and ammo last longer than food.

Honestly, I never thought of this from a "if they'd only received benefits" stand point. I got the impression from the original article that this woman never really invested in seeking aid. Based on my limited experience and the information provided (and I'm not expert), I think this woman was likely bipolar, possibly schizophrenic. I don't think HHS or any government entity is partially or directly responsible for what she did. I truly wish somebody could have caught up to her and flagged her for mental health issues much, much sooner...but given her tendancy towards the nomadic I can see why that would have been a challenging task to undertake.

So she can afford gun, cellphone or computer, internet access and a phone bill but not food? A pack of ramen noodles is a quarter or less.A bag of spaghetti costs around a buck. She also is in the bible belt she couldn't find a charity to feed her. I know in my city we got soup kitchens that feed the homeless, we have John 3:116 that gives food to families, salvation army and all sorts of other charities that aid the less fortunate. Texas doesn't have those things?

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Again...guns and ammo last longer than food. She might have bought that gun years ago, when she had some spare money.

Libraries provide free internet access. Or she might have used a friends computer. Or a friends cellphone. Who knows?

I don't know what Texas has. I don't live there. Why don't you calm down?

The little girl was updating her facebook status DURING the crisis. That implies, she had a cellphone with HS internet on it.

There are not any pawnshops in her town or someone she could sell her gun to? Last I checked guns are worth money.Unless she had that gun duck taped and jerry rigged its hard to believe that she couldn't get anything for her gun.

Not unless that welfare office is inside the library.

Texas is in the bible belt. That means lots of charities to help the less fortunate. If her and her family were starving it was because they did not go to any of the local charities.
