Texas Model Has 'Long Road to Recovery' After Walking Into Plane Propeller

To all that find humor in this you deserve to be what you are.

Yeah - almost a nominee for a Darwin award. ;/

Ever bump into a wall as you walk? Ever stub a toe? Those both require more inattention than walking into a prop arc. Again, it's easy to criticize, but these things do happen, and are easier to happen than you think. While on the flight deck or flight line around prop planes I was in constant paranoid fear of the prop arc, and still had a couple close calls, as has any one who has spent significant time in those situations.

It is an easier mistake to make than you might think. You don't really see the prop, and if you are in front or directly beside it, you don't feel the heavy wind associated with it. The noise is loud enough that you cannot really pinpoint it by sound either. It is something that happens. Yes, it is careless, but it's not as all out stupid as you might think.

Yes, Redress I understand this. FD workers tend to have a rather dark sense of humor regarding prop accidents and jet intakes.

I knew Texas sucked. This just confirms it.

Ever worked on a flight deck, I have. Worst fear was seeing someone get turned to paste from a prop (we all figured if it happened to us we probably wouldn't' notice). The jokes aren't because we're mocking this lady, but as a way of dealing with a horrific incident.

And yes AS, I understand even train folks screw up.

As part of my duties, I was Safety Petty Officer for Ops Dept. They had us watch some really fun videos of what happens when things go bad. Video's that amazingly haven't made it to the web. All I can say is, DAMN how'd she survive??

I worked with Demo as a young PFC and LCpl. Among our training video's was one where a dude decided to crimp a blasting cap by biting it.

:doh

well, it's one way to cut long-term costs in an era of tightening budgets... It was the facial equivalent of the guy who decided to knock in a retaining pin using the back of a .50 cal round.

Strong Stomachs Only. :)

See, that is some one doing something actually stupid. Being around aircraft, you just have to have a moments inattention.

Did they still have the mishap video set to REM's End of the World as we Know it? I would love to get a copy of that, though I would have to dub better music over it. Safety stand down day was a lot of fun for horrible mishap videos.

I don't understand why they were letting people/passengers on or off the plane while the props were still spinning. You would think that they would shut all the way down if they were going to be close enough for this to be an issue.

We saw pics of the chief's head, brain, and cranial (gruesome) who got hit by a spinning helicopter rotor. (Different ship, but happened while I was on my ship) He didn't duck down far enough, and the rotor dipped. It was horrible but they were trying to impress flight deck safety. (Not that I ever went up to the flight deck during flight ops, with the only exception being when I got flown off the ship. We couldn't even see the plane on the deck til we got right up to it, it was so foggy with a little rain.)

The other pics that were getting sent around was definitely due to stupidity and had nothing to do with aircraft (although it did involve rotating equipment). This guy had an itch in his nose and used a power drill to scratch it, turned on. He also lost a good portion of his nose.

I've seen one like that, the one I got to watch was... no music, just "Here's the situation, here's what happened, oh and here's the aftermath"

/shudder

Yeah. Death on a ship hits hard too, since it really is not supposed to happen, and always seems to happen to that 20 year old guy, just married with his first kid on the way.

I hear ya. MM3 Battle, just became a dad, dead to a fire. Sad part is, eh was doing his duty, but he did it wrong and got himself dead. Rushed an engine fire with no protection and died to toxic fumes and then baked. :(

Not to be cruel, but damn, talk about a blonde moment.

Here's hoping she makes a successful recovery and is able to maintain her zest and zeal for life and realizes most folks that walk into a prop don't live.

brings back scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark where that nazi boxer fighting Ford gets the "spin cycle"
