Recall petition shredding suspect is not the father of our country

A 53-year-old rural River Falls man is a suspect in a petition-shredding incident last Wednesday, Nov. 23, after 5 p.m., in front of EconoFoods on Main Street. After he pretended to sign a recall for Gov. Scott Walker, the man allegedly jabbed at the petition form with a pen and then ripped the paper. He was confronted by recall petition volunteers. As he walked away, the man gave his name as “George Washington.”
Why do people do such stupid things? He is most likely going to be spending time in prison, so he has my vote for Wisconsin's Political Darwin Award.

    Article is here.

Here's another one who is going to prison for destroying a petition with signatures on it, then being stupid enough to send a tweet to governor Walker that he did it.

I've heard of similar incidents in years past. Bottom line, some people like the constitution, and even wear it on their sleeve, until it goes against them . . . .

Even worse is threats of violence that I have heard are being directed against the petition collectors. The right clearly doesn't like to lose . . . .

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- Opponents of Gov. Scott Walker said they have faced threats and thefts in the days since the recall effort began.

Two volunteers in the petition drive reported violent threats made against them to the police. [...]

When news of this intent was posted a few weeks ago, some speculated that this was mere political gamesmanship and nobody would really engage in such criminality. Well, we now know that was not the case. This is rather sad that some folks are so polarized by the extremism that they would be willing to commit a crime and deny their fellow citizens the exercise of their rights.

I hope this stips here but I suspect this is not the last we will hear about such reprehensible behavior.

Of course it's him, George Washington never lies. *crosses arms*

It will be up to Walker and his volunteers or privately-paid staff to check more than half a million signatures for duplicates and verify that all signers are qualified. And, after the petitions are submitted (on varying dates in mid-January), Walker’s staff will have only 10 days to get all this done .

And making matters worse is that some organizations circulating petitions are actively encouraging voters to sign more than once. The MacIver Institute reports:

One Wisconsin Now, a liberal non-profit, posted on its website “You can circulate or sign a recall petition even if you have already signed another recall petition.”
‘Vote’ Early and Often for the Walker Recall Election

McKenna said a longtime listener and fan emailed her Wednesday morning. The subject line of the email, which McKenna sent to Wisconsin Reporter, reads “election fraud.”

“Just saw your name with accurate address signed to a recall petition. Will this fraud be caught?” according to the email.

While McKenna said she can’t verify the report, she said the emailer is a “fairly regular listener,” and she’s inclined to believe the listener wouldn’t make up the charge.

Re: Recall petition shredding suspect is not the father of our country

The key in your source is "While McKenna said she can’t verify the report,...............". However, I won't deny that crap like that happens. Both sides have done it. That's why the goal for Walker's recall is 700,000, not just the 540,000 it takes to recall him. That way, the recall organizers will have a big enough cushion that accusations like the one you posted won't mean a thing, because the margin will be large enough so that, whether or not there are fraudulent signatures, there will be no doubt in anybody's mind that the recall turned out to be an honest one. And, at the rate they are collecting signatures, they are easily going to have more than a million by the time they turn them in. More than a million, despite the attempts of some nutters to destroy as many of them as they can.
