Oh my, it seems Big Brother (the Kansas Governor) is watching every move...

A Kansas teenager is in trouble after mocking Gov. Sam Brownback during a mock legislative assembly for high school students.

Emma Sullivan, a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, was in Topeka on Monday as part of Kansas Youth in Government, a program for students interested in politics and government.

During the session, in which Brownback addressed the group, Sullivan posted on her personal Twitter page:

“Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot”

Are you surprised that social media posts are being read by various governmental entities' staff members?

It is odd that a govenor would become concerned over what a high school student tweeted her friends.

If the govenor's team hadn't act on this it would amounted to nothing but now they have given her 15 minutes of fame.

If that's true, perhaps THAT is why she got in trouble, rather than because of her tweet.

What's her name again?

How, exactly, did the "governor's team" act? Did they alert the kid's principal to their unhappiness?
What?

It's not as if the high school student was disciplined for the conduct at the event, sponsored by the school or anything.

“Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot”

"“students on school-sponsored field trips, in which they are representing the school, would be expected to conduct themselves in accordance with school district policies, including use of electronic devices. Students may express their personal beliefs, views, and opinions, as long as they do so appropriately and in accordance with school policies.”

To me, the politics is not the issue. Did the student "tweet" on school time instead of learning? If so, then it doesn't matter if she tweeted about the governor or about a recipe for apple pie. She should end up in the principal's office, and kudos to the school system for disciplining her, and making sure that she is getting an education, regardless of whether or not her tweet was political in nature.

It's a good thing she didn't say anything about Obama, because we'd never hear the end of the "Liberal conspiracy to quash all dissent."

Of course there is an issue of her doing this on school time, but should the Governor's staff monitor this? I don't think so.

She never actually spoke to the governor. The principal has told her to write a letter of apology and has even given her talking points. She has gotten such support that she is not writing the letter.

What I don't understand is what did the governor or his staff think was going to happen. Was the tweet of a teenager really worth all the attention that has been caused by their response? Did they think no one would hear about this?

Gotta agree here. Make the governor's office look childish and petty.

Gov. Brownback did the right thing by apologizing to the teen for his staff's over reaction to her tweet.

Tweeting Kansas Teen Gets Apology from Gov. Brownback, Her Following Soars

A Kansas teen who refused to apologize to Gov. Sam Brownback for an insulting tweet got an apology today from the governor himself for his staff’s “over-reaction.”

An unpleasant tweet by Emma Sullivan, 18, was flagged by Brownback’s staff last week. The teen was told by her principal at Shawnee Mission East High School to apologize, but she refused. The national brouhaha has led to her Twitter following soar from 60 to more than 10,000.

“My staff over-reacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize. Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms,” Brownback said in a statement. ...

Kids do stupid things daily. Why is this news?

Re: Disparaging tweet about Gov. Sam Brownback lands Kansas teen in principal’s offic

What I find amazing is we have higher standards for high school students than we do conservative members of congress. Remember the tweeting during the State of the Union and someone yelling out "you lie!"
